Gladiolus Flowers Gladiolus Flowers

It is hard to go wrong when photographing flowers as beautiful as gladiolus in late day sunlight. Nothing fancy here - just move in close and use a wide aperture.

Double Pipe Horse Jump Double Pipe Horse Jump

Horse jumping Photography is the most strenuous test I gave the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens autofocus system while reviewing this lens. And it performed quite well in this test.

Fireworks Exploding Fireworks Exploding

Multiple fireworks rockets explode in the night sky. Image brightness for fireworks photography is completely determined by the aperture setting since the rockets and explosions are never still. I sometimes use a neutral density filter when photographing fireworks to allow a wider aperture to be used (for sharper images due to less effects of diffraction being visible).

Delaware Falls, Ricketts Glen State Park Delaware Falls, Ricketts Glen State Park

For this Delaware Falls (in Ricketts Glen State Park) picture, I used a large fern-covered rock to provide foreground interest. A CP filter was used for increased saturation/decreased reflections.

I've been taking the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens with me a lot - it is so small that I barely know it is there - and I've never been disappointed when I chose to use it.

Luna Moth on Tree Trunk Luna Moth on Tree Trunk

A beautiful luna moth rests on a large (dead) tree trunk (stump). I actually moved the tree stump into my studio for the background of several subjects I was shooting at the time. The 40 STM Lens worked great for very loosely cropped moth pictures.

Red, White and Blue Fireworks Red, White and Blue Fireworks

When shooting fireworks, it usually difficult to know the proper framing for the burst coming next. So, framing wide and cropping to taste later is usually my technique.

Rocky Brook Falls at 40mm Rocky Brook Falls at 40mm

I had the Canon EF 40mm pocket lens along on my hike into Rocky Brook Falls in northern Maine. As usual, this cheap, tiny lens did a remarkable job. F/8 for 8 - an f/8 aperture for 8 seconds (with a CP filter) delivered the results you see here.

Ganoga Falls, Ricketts Glen State Park Ganoga Falls, Ricketts Glen State Park

Of the 22 named waterfalls in Ricketts Glen State Park, Ganoga, at 94', is the tallest. And, it is one that I find challenging to create a good composition of. The colorful fall foliage was definitely helpful on this trip. A CP filter was used to cut reflections and increase saturation.

Three Fireworks Burst Three Fireworks Burst

Subjects often work very well compositionally when available in a quantity of three. Three is a very good number for compositions.
