The sky was much brighter than the foreground in this picture. To bring balance to the image, I exposed so that the histogram was pushed as far right as possible without blowing the highlights. I then stacked the original exposure and a reduced exposure in Photoshop as layers and erased the top layer where it made sense to allow the bottom layer to show through.

One of the nice aspects of a zoom lens with a wide focal length range is that you don't have to keep up with the kids - falling over the rocks to do so. For a more personal image, work ahead of the subject and shoot as they approach.
