This lens could easily be handheld at a lower shutter speed and therefore a lower ISO setting, but Mikayla was not standing still enough to prevent motion blur at these lower speeds.

I was trying to get the dark horse heading into the frame from the bottom left and the light horse heading into the frame from the top right. Getting both heads facing me at the same time was impossible - horses swing their heads side to side and move forward as they graze.

There are many varieties of starfish, but this was the most common type we found in Acadia National Park. A Circular Polarizer Filter was used to cut the reflections from the wet starfish and surroundings.

Layers of interest through this image include the keeper's hands about to catch the soccer ball, the shooter with a great expression on her face , the beaten defender and a trailing teammate.

When shooting sports in steady lighting conditions, I usually establish a manual exposure with a wide open aperture (to blur the background and gain a faster shutter speed) and a shutter speed sufficient to stop the action. In this case, 1/800 at ISO 3200 was not good enough. So, I was using the 50D's emergency ISO 6400 setting. It doesn't look bad at this reduced size - and the image would have been blurred at ISO 3200.

Not your conventional New York City Empire State Building picture - but I'm always looking for new ways of looking at things. I like the leading lines drawing the viewer's eye toward the distant subject.

I look for the unconventional angle for my lens why Mikayla explores an unconventional use of a street barrier chain in Bar Harbor, Maine. Having the extreme range of focal lengths available in this lens makes finding the unconventional shot easier. This is an HDR image.

A few minutes after this shot was taken, parents started turning on car lights for the players to see by and the officials called the game a few minutes after that. While the image quality from the 50D at ISO 12800 is not great, it allowed the game to be captured into nearly dark conditions.
