Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens Sample Pictures

The sun rises following an overnight snow storm, casting a warm glow on the bright landscape.

I spent the first hour of daylight (if you call it that) on Cadillac Mountain this day in fog so thick that I feared getting lost. Giving up, I began my descent on the mountain to be greeted by this sight. This is an HDR (High Dynamic Range) image.

A beautiful sunrise at Otter Cliff, Acadia National Park, Maine. Unfortunately, this scene did not last long. The sun quickly rose through the narrow opening under those clouds to produce flat cloud-diffused light.

A clear, dark sky and a calm lake (Island Pond in northern Maine) make an ideal setting for shooting the annual Perseid meteor shower. I usually figure 30 seconds as my tolerance for avoiding star trails in 14mm photos. This exposure duration is long enough to catch a meteorite in most images during this active shower.

Look for leading lines in your foreground. In this photo, I used the lines of the rock to draw the viewer's eye to the far-brighter falls.

This shoot presented several big challenges. One was the over-powering light from the large windows. To resolve this problem, a late-in-the-day time was chosen for the shoot. Blinds were pulled to eliminate outdoor distractions. Interior light was from a Canon Speedlite 580EX II fired into a large umbrella.
 
The next big challenge was the small amount of space available to work in - about 14'x14'. I used the widest rectilinear lens available - the Canon EF 14mm L II. To keep the lines running parallel to the image frame border, a level camera position was used.
 
Position in the room was such that the headboard background would be as clean as possible - to show the curve of the headboard.

The first light of the day hits the dramatic cliffs at Otter Cliff, Acadia National Park, Maine. This is a digital split neutral density/HDR image comprised of three bracketed exposures manually combined in Photoshop.

Snow clings to the still-attached leaves after a late fall snow storm.

The fall-colored leaves look very high up in this picture. The perspective from a 14mm lens from the ground make these Hickory trees look much taller than they really are.

Of course, the clouds are more attractive than the pasture.

With great anticipation, the kids await the special celebration happening the next morning.

Tongue and groove Yellow Pine boards and laminated beams on the ceiling of an octagonal patio make an interesting shape. Lighting is reflected daylight.

The clouds in the night sky are being lit by the rising moon. What appears to be a setting sun is light from a nearby town. When shooting a subject with a solid black or white border, frame the shot at this border edge. Then use Photoshop to extend the black or white side as much as you desire.

Shot from ground level with an ultra-wide angle lens, these barn doors and especially the columned porch over them appear to get narrower as they go up.

The natural (and normal) vignetting of the wide open lens frames the white ceiling fan. Lighting is from a window.

Lichens beautifully covers the rocks on Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, Maine. Using an ultra-wide angle lens for a closeup will strongly emphasize the size of foreground objects.

Tree trunks, at least some of them, can make great subjects and how they are positioned in the frame can make a big difference in the final composition. In this photo, I positioned significant trunks framing additional significant trunks deep into the woods. The wide angle focal length emphasizes the foreground trees relative to the distant trees. Winter landscape photography, without snow or ice to work with, can be challenging. Look for trunks!
