If you're a Canon shooter, then there's a lot to like about the newly announced EOS 7D Mark II. We were especially excited about a few features – but somewhat disappointed with others [or by the lack thereof].
Likes:
- 65-point AF - It's hard not to like the AF system found in the EOS 1D X and EOS 5D Mark III. It's feature-rich, fast, accurate, and customizable. Including it in Canon's top-of-the-line APS-C sensor camera was a great idea.
- Fast 10fps Burst - Large Buffer - Until recently, only EOS 1-series cameras had a burst rate this high. But now you can get 10 fps (up to 31 RAW images) at a fraction of the cost of a 1-series camera. This combined with the 7D Mark II's AF should make this a go-to camera sports shooters who can't make the leap to a 1D X.
- Durable shutter (200,000) - Both Bryan and I do a lot of shooting. We really appreciate Canon's decision to include such a durable shutter in this camera. At 10fps, you'll likely go through shutter clicks faster than you would using another camera. So added durability is important for customers' long-term satisfaction.
- Dual-Pixel Sensor / Movie Servo AF - First introduced in the EOS 70D, Canon's Dual-Pixel sensor was a perfect mate for the 7D Mark II. As someone who's been shooting a decent amount of video lately, the Movie AF feature is something I'll get a lot of use out of.
- 1080p at 60fps - While the orig. EOS 7D could capture video at 60fps, it was limited to 720p. I'm really looking forward to shooting the EOS 7D Mark II at 60fps in 1080p and slowing down the video to 30fps (or 24fps) for great visual effects.
- Anti-flicker technology - Both Bryan and I shoot a fair amount of indoor sports. This feature will help us by eliminating those "dark frames" captured when shooting under flickering lights.
- Dual Memory Card Slots - This is a feature that I forgot to include when first posting this article, but it's an extremely useful one. I always have my 5D III set to record duplicate RAW images to the CF and SD memory cards. This gives me a great safeguard against a single card failure or the accidental deletion of data. Peace of mind is a very valuable thing – it shouldn't be underestimated.
Not so happy about...
- Built-in intervalometer - On the face of it, this feature belongs in the "Likes" section. It's a feature I've been wanting for years. But Canon did something very strange with this feature -
they limited it to 99 shots or less(see update). What!? That's about 3-4 seconds of time lapse video. I typically capture around 400-500 shots when I do a time lapse, so this "feature" becomes so much less useful for me. I'm hoping Canon updates the camera via firmware to enable capturing significantly more images (>1000). Update: The Canon EOS 7D Mark II does allow for an indefinite number of captures if you set the intervalometer to "00." (thanks Mike) However, I'd still like a couple more digits so that I can specify a specific number of captures significantly larger than 99. - No Focus Peaking in Video - Magic Lantern has spoiled me – I love focus peaking. At a quick glance at the LCD, I can see what's in focus when shooting video. While the Movie Servo AF makes focus peaking less necessary, I'd still like to have it for things like manual focus pulls and confirming focus even when using Movie Servo AF.
- No 4K Video - Truth be told, this isn't a feature I would use anytime soon. Processing in 4K takes more time, attention and processing power than I care to devote to it. But considering the last EOS 7D's life cycle spanned 5 years, who's to say I won't be interested in 4K capture before then?
Considering everything, though, I think Canon has developed a great camera in the 7D Mark II. There's so much more to like than to complain about (and the complaints are rather small in comparison). The EOS 7D Mark II's feature set makes it an excellent complement to anyone shooting with a 5D Mark III. And with that in mind, one will be showing up at my door as soon as it becomes available. :-)

Nikon shooters attach the Air Remote TTL-N (released today) to their camera’s hotshoe, Canon shooters the Air Remote TTL-C (released last year).
Both get to shoot with TTL and without any cords, and with plenty of power, speed and light shaping options.
To celebrate this, we gave B1 off-camera flashes, an Air Remote TTL-N and some Light Shaping Tools to wedding photographer Brian Marcus and asked him to take them for a spin on the streets of New York City.

EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM - The Portable Super Telephoto Lens
Super telephoto lenses are essential whether on a safari or the sidelines to bring the image in tight on a subject, but they often are not the lightest lenses to carry around. Canon's new compact and lightweight EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM super telephoto lens will help lighten the load of professional and advanced amateur photographers. At only 4.6 lbs., it is roughly half the weight of the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. The new EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens features newly developed gapless dual-layered diffractive optical (DO) elements that help improve optical performance while maintaining virtually the same size and weight as its predecessor. The DO element in the new lens is optimally positioned deeper within the optical formula than in the original EF 400mm DO lens to help reduce flare around backlit subjects. Other optical improvements include the use of a large-diameter ground and polished aspherical element and a UD glass element that work together with the DO elements for thorough correction of spherical, chromatic and other optical aberrations. Canon's original SWC (Sub Wavelength Structure) lens coating is also used internally to help improve resistance to flare. Fluorine coating is applied to the front and rear lens elements to repel dust and make lens cleaning easy. A nine blade curved diaphragm is also incorporated to help produce smooth, natural-looking bokeh in areas outside the depth of field surrounding the main subject.
The new EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens features Canon's Optical Image Stabilization with up to four shutter speed steps of correction**. In addition there are three IS modes - standard, panning and during exposure only - that help to provide superb results in a variety of shooting situations. For greater convenience, the Image Stabilizer does not have to be disabled when shooting with a tripod. Four programmable buttons on the front of the lens allow photographers to customize lens and camera operation to fit their unique shooting style, or simply pause autofocus (AF) adjustment at any point to hold focus on a subject in a busy scene. Even in AF mode, full-time manual focus can be employed at any time. The lens also features a Power Focus mode for smooth focus "pulls" ideal for filmmaking. For those mobile shooters and documentarians truly "on-the-go", the lens is also highly resistant to dust and water for durability and reliability when shooting in even the harshest conditions.
EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM - Smooth Quiet Focus in a Versatile Lens
The new EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is the first EF-series zoom lens for full-frame sensor cameras to include a lead screw-type stepping motor (STM) that provides virtually silent AF while shooting video. The 24-105mm is one of the most versatile focal range options in the EF lineup as it can be used as a wide-angle lens while out on the town as well as a portrait-length zoom when trying to get closer to your subjects.
The Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to four shutter speed steps of correction,** while two aspheric lenses plus a UD lens combine to provide high-quality results for both still images and video. The PowerShot SX60 HS camera features Canon's Face Detection and Tracking AF system plus full resolution continuous shooting up to 6.4 frames per second (when not utilizing Tracking AF). The camera also features a new EOS-style grip design for comfortable and secure handling. Users can choose between a three-inch 922K dot Vari-Angle LCD screen for low-or high-angle shooting and a high-resolution 922K dot electronic viewfinder, ideal for shooting in bright outdoor conditions.
When shooting at extreme telephoto focal lengths, the Zoom Framing Assist function remembers the user's previous zoom position, zooms out to locate the subject, and zooms right back into the saved position when the button is released. An additional feature to this Zoom Framing Assist allows users to preset a desired composition such as whole body, upper body or face. Once this feature is enabled, the PowerShot SX60 HS camera will zoom its lens automatically to maintain the desired composition even if the subject moves closer or further from the camera. Another new function called Zoom Memory makes it possible to quickly return to the most recently used zoom position, even if the battery or memory card is replaced.
To help make photographs and video that are creative yet simple to capture, the PowerShot SX60 HS camera features Creative Shot mode and Canon's Smart AUTO mode that intelligently selects optimal camera settings from 58 different pre-defined scenes for still shots and 21 for video. The PowerShot SX60 HS camera also features full-manual exposure and focus control, with the photographer's choice of JPEG, RAW, or JPEG+RAW capture modes. The PowerShot SX60 HS camera is fully compatible with Canon EX-series Speedlites for professional quality lighting effects.
The PowerShot N2 Digital Camera
The new Canon PowerShot N2 digital camera, with its stylish square shape, is packed with creative features that provide users with even more freedom to capture their most creative images. Featuring an 8x Optical Zoom lens (equivalent to 28-224mm), the camera gives users the imaging quality needed to capture great photos. The camera also houses a 16.1 megapixel* CMOS image sensor and DIGIC 6 Image processor so memories are preserved and can be shared for years to come.
With enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities, the PowerShot N2 allows users looking to share creative images of moments with family and friends anytime and anywhere. Using the Mobile Device Connect Button, users can connect to a compatible smartphone or tablet easily. Images uploaded to the cloud via Canon iMAGE GATEWAY can be shared easily on social media platforms. The PowerShot N2 camera also includes NFC making initial setup and pairing easier with a compatible Android device.
The sleek, distinct design of the PowerShot N2 camera features a 2.8-inch, 180 degree tilt, capacitive touch LCD screen and, in combination with the camera's new Self Portrait mode, makes this the ideal camera for taking a spontaneous selfie. The screen also allows for users to capture low-angle or difficult to shoot angles. Different from the shutter ring on the PowerShot N camera, that could be pressed on the top or bottom of the ring, the new shutter ring on the PowerShot N2 camera now functions with an all-round release, allowing users to hold the camera in various ways as well as making it a great camera choice for left or right-handed photographers.
The camera's Creative Shot mode, which was also featured on the PowerShot N camera, has been enhanced with added filters, giving users the ability to easily apply either a Retro, Monochrome, Special or Natural look to their photos. Also unique to this model, the advanced movie shooting feature in Creative Shot mode combines several movie clips automatically with special effects including super slow motion, quick motion, and various filters for creating fantastic short films. Pricing and Availability
The PowerShot G7 X digital camera is scheduled to be available in October 2014 for an estimated retail price of $699.99. The PowerShot SX60 HS digital camera is scheduled to be available in October 2014 for estimated retail price of $549.99. The PowerShot N2 digital camera is scheduled to be available in December 2014 with a choice of black and white body colors for an estimated retail price of $299.99.

Profoto releases Air Remote TTL-N, a clever little unit that allows Nikon shooters to do TTL metering with the Profoto B1 off-camera flash.
September 15, 2014 - “Game changer.” “Light of my life.” “A little bit of light and magic.” These are just a few of the words that were said when the Profoto B1 off-camera flash was released in November 2013.
The most attention-grabbing feature of the B1 was, and still is, its TTL metering. The TTL feature was initially only available for Canon shooters. But Profoto promised to continue to develop the B1’s patent-pending AirTTL system to also include Nikon. Today, Profoto delivers on that promise by releasing the Air Remote TTL-N.
Air Remote TTL-N is a small, wireless radio transmitter that attaches to the Nikon camera’s hotshoe. Attaching the unit enables TTL metering with the B1. The Air Remote TTL-N can also be used to manually control and sync the B1 or any other Profoto flash with Air built-in.
In other words, Air Remote TTL-N is the Nikon shooter’s equivalent to the Canon shooter’s Air Remote TTL-C (available since November 2013). But note that it is only the Air Remote TTL unit that is different depending on the camera that you are using. The B1 works the same regardless of camera brand. There are two AirTTL remotes, but there is only one B1 off-camera flash.
Air Remote TTL-N is sold separately. The recommended sales price is €295 / $395. The already released Air Remote TTL-C has the same price.
Profoto will continue to develop the AirTTL system and the off-camera flash concept. Next in line is a firmware upgrade for high-speed sync (HSS). New Light Shaping Tools, optimized for on-location photography, are also on their way. Furthermore, Profoto is looking into adding TTL functionality for even more camera manufacturers.

Nikon presents a film by Nikon Ambassador John Wright, featuring the Nikon/MRMC Studio Bot and ex Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt as they perform together. The production was shot entirely on a Nikon D810 camera attached to the Nikon/MRMC robotic solution and demonstrates the level of creative control available on the Nikon/MRMC Studio Bot as it is animated to dance with professional dancer and performer Kimberly. No CGI was used in the making of this production and all camera positions where robotic or static.
