From Sony Electronics:

Sony Electronics Launches New SDK Version Taking Remote Shooting and Camera Integration to the Next Level

Sony’s new Camera Remote SDK version introduces faster processing speed and enhanced function support as well as extending compatibility to the ZV-E1

SAN DIEGO, CA. April 12, 2023 – Sony Electronics announces the launch of a new version (Version 1.08) of the Camera Remote Software Development Kit (SDK) that enables remote operation and setting changes of Sony cameras. Version 1.08 widens the range of potential applications with new features, as well as expanding the compatible models. Version 1.08 means the SDK can be used with the ZV-E1 full-frame interchangeable lens camera, announced on March 29, 2023.

“With each SDK release, we are integrating learnings from customers and expanding the functionality and magnitude of applications and capabilities,” says Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “The updated SDK allows our cameras to be used in more industrial and B2B applications, ranging from photogrammetry or medical companies, to inspection, and e-Commerce. We are excited for professional clients to have the ability to explore new functionalities.”

Key new features include:

  • Improved processing speed: In repetitive shooting scenarios, the processing speed for setting, shooting, and transferring files is reduced by approximately 20%i, improving workflow efficiency. This will be perfect for e-Commerce applications, where users need to take 360 degree continuous pictures of an object or model for web publishing, with quick turnaround times. Capturing more frames in a shorter time also means that battery life is optimized, which is particularly important for drone applications such as mapping or surveying.
  • Added support for shutter trigger by electrical signal and remote power on/offii. In photogrammetry, photobooths or even road traffic management, an electrical signal improves the accuracy for triggering image capture, opposed to a software-based trigger.
  • New remote settings support: Version 1.08 supports remote menu settings for video, including picture profile settings and timecode (TC)/user bit (UB) settingsiii. This will create an enhanced workflow for video making and widen possibilities for existing photo-based applications.
  • “Overheating warning” status notification: This function allows the camera to notify remote users of any significant increase in temperatureiv. In outdoor applications such as desert roads or systems where the camera is embedded in a wider computer infrastructure with high heat due to processing, users will be able to monitor the cameras more precisely.

With this SDK release, software developers can design bespoke applications tailored to business requirements, integrating Sony’s equipment for size-critical drone and speed camera systems, as well as other medical, education, government, and e-commerce applications. This SDK will continue to be available free of charge. The Camera Remote SDK can be used to control several cameras in the Sony camera range including Cinema Line cameras, with the full list of compatible cameras available here.

From Canon:

Canon Extends Paid Add-On Applications Availability to CR-N300, CR-N500, and CR-X300 4K PTZ Cameras Via a Firmware Update

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 4, 2023 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that the “Add-On Applications System” for PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) remote cameras will be available for the CR-N300, CR-N500, and CR-X300. Available through a future firmware update, the Add-On Applications System will provide access to new paid video production features such as auto tracking and auto loop. The auto tracking application will give users the ability to automatically pan, tilt, and zoom to track moving subjects, and the auto loop application will allow users to program and automate repeated camera movements.

These paid add-on applications uniquely position Canon in the PTZ market as the applications run from within the camera itself, instead of other solutions in the market requiring external devices to operate functions like auto tracking. With the addition of the Add-On Applications System, customers can now directly add the new capabilities to the PTZ camera, providing a better value for end-users.

Auto Tracking Add-On Application

The auto tracking paid add-on application enables automatic tracking according to a subject’s movements. As the subject moves, the camera will pan, tilt, and zoom to maintain the subject’s composition in the frame. This added function helps to reduce the camera operator’s workload, letting them focus on other tasks such as camera switching and streaming, and allows for multi-camera shoots with fewer people on set.

The auto tracking is highly responsive, allowing for full body, upper body, and head and torso tracking at both slow and normal walking speeds, and full body and upper body tracking at fast walking speed. In addition, the auto tracking application provides users with a wide range of adjustment functions such as composition, tracking sensitivity, priority display area, fixed viewing angle area, tracking target auto select, pan/tilt halting area, initial position, auto select exclusion, and pan/tilt operation control.

The new auto tracking add-on application is ideal for end-users in markets such as house of worship and corporate event streaming, educational workshops and lectures, and broadcast and corporate interviews.

Auto Loop Add-On Application

The auto loop paid add-on application helps automate repeated camera movements, potentially lessening the burden on camera operators. Camera operators will now have the flexibility to select between two repeated movements, loop or back-and-forth, based on needs and the shooting environment. It also provides the ability to enable smooth acceleration and deceleration when starting and stopping movement between two preset positions for more professional camera movements. For added convenience, camera operators can adjust settings such as position, route, preview, and start from one screen.

The new auto loop add-on application is ideal for consistent smooth on-air movements for end-users in markets such as house of worship and corporate event streaming, broadcast and over-the-top (OTT) sports and interview streaming, and commercial production.

Additional Firmware Features

In addition to adding the “Add-On Application System” to the cameras, the firmware update for each camera will also provide several additional features and improvements that shows Canon’s commitment to the professional video market. Among the improvements is the addition of SRT and FreeD protocol support to the CR-X300 camera.

Pricing and Availability

The Firmware Update for all three PTZ cameras to add the “Add-On Applications System” is scheduled to be available in July 2023. The paid Auto Tracking Application is scheduled to be available in August 2023 for the CR-N300 and CR-N500 for $1200.00*. The paid Auto Loop Tracking Application is scheduled to be available in August 2023 for the CR-N300 and CR-N500, and CR-X300 for $800.00*.

Get the Canon PTX camera firmware updates at B&H.

*Specifications, availability and prices are subject to change without notice. Both paid add-on applications will be available for a free, no commitment 30-day trial.

From Canon:

Canon Developing World’s First Ultra-High-Sensitivity ILC Equipped With SPAD Sensor, Supporting Precise Monitoring Through Clear Color Image Capture of Subjects Several Miles Away, Even In Darkness

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 4, 2023 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced that its parent company, Canon Inc., is developing the MS-500, the world’s first1 ultra-high-sensitivity interchangeable-lens camera (ILC) equipped with a 1.0 inch Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) sensor2 featuring the world’s highest pixel count of 3.2 megapixels3. The camera leverages special characteristics of SPAD sensors to achieve superb low-light performance while also utilizing broadcast lenses (sold separately) that feature high performance at telephoto-range focal lengths. Thanks to such advantages, the MS-500 camera is expected to be ideal for such applications as high-precision monitoring.

There is a growing need for high-precision monitoring systems in such environments as national borders, seaports, airports, train stations, power plants, and other key infrastructure facilities, in order to quickly identify targets even under adverse conditions including darkness in which human eyes cannot see, and from long distances.

The currently in-development MS-500 camera is equipped with a 1.0 inch SPAD sensor that helps reduce noise, making it possible to produce clear, full-color HD imaging even in extreme low-light environments. When paired with Canon’s extensive range of broadcast lenses, which excel at super-telephoto image capture, the camera is capable of accurately capturing subjects with precision in extreme low-light environments, even from great distances. For example, the camera may be used for nighttime monitoring of seaports, thanks to its ability to spot vessels that are several miles away, thus enabling identification and high-precision monitoring of vessels in or around the seaport.

With CMOS sensors, which are commonly used in conventional modern digital cameras, each pixel measures the amount of light that reaches the pixel within a given time. However, the readout of the accumulated electronic charge contains electronic noise, which may diminish image quality, due to the process by which accumulated light is measured. This could lead to degradation of the resulting image, particularly when used in low-light environments. SPAD sensors employ a technology known as “photon counting” in which light particles (photons) that enter each individual pixel are counted. When even a single photon enters a pixel it is instantly amplified approximately 1 million times and output as an electrical signal. Every single one of these photons can be digitally counted, thus making possible zero-noise during signal readout—a key advantage of SPAD sensors4. Because of this technological advantage, the MS-500 camera will be able to operate even under nighttime environments with no ambient starlight5, and will also be capable of accurately detecting subjects with minimal illumination and capture clear color images.

The MS-500 camera employs the bayonet lens mount (based on BTA S-1005B standards) which is widely used in the broadcast lens industry. This enables the camera to be used with Canon’s extensive range of broadcast lenses, which feature superb optical performance. As a result, the camera will be able to recognize and capture subjects that are several miles away.

Canon MS-500 Camera Back

Going forward, Canon will continue to pursue R&D and work to create products that could surpass the ability of the human eye and contribute to the safety and security of society. Canon has a long history of comprehensive imaging — optical, sensor, image processing and image analysis — technologies.

Canon plans to begin selling the MS-500 in 2023*.

The Canon MS-500 camera will be displayed as a reference exhibit at the Canon booth during the 2023 NAB Show for broadcast and filmmaking equipment, to be held in Las Vegas from Sunday, April 16 to Wednesday, April 19.

1 Among color cameras. As of April 2, 2023. Based on Canon research.
2 Among SPAD sensors for imaging use. As of April 2, 2023. Based on Canon research.
3 Total pixel count: 3.2 million pixels. Effective pixel count: 2.1 million pixels.
4 For more information on how SPAD sensors operate and how they differ from CMOS sensors, please visit the following website: https://global.canon/en/technology/spad-sensor-2021.html
5 Ambient starlight is equivalent to approximately 0.02 lux. A nighttime environment with no ambient starlight is equivalent to approximately 0.007 lux.

By shortening the overall length of the lens and making changes to the focus configuration, the 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary lens is capable of focusing as close as 12cm with an impressive magnification ratio of 1:3.6, allowing for unique close-up photographs with expansive backgrounds, making it particularly appealing to vloggers, hikers, landscape photographers and more. A stepping motor offers swift, precise AF for both still and video applications.

The SIGMA 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary adds the classic standard prime lens focal length to the I series. This is the fifth F2 I series lens to date, joining the 20mm, 24mm, 35mm and 65mm lenses. All F2 I series lenses feature an arc-type AF/MF switch and a stylized ring on the all-metal barrel. This DG DN lens is designed specifically for full-frame mirrorless systems and is offered in Sony E-mount and Leica L-Mount versions.

Compact, lightweight and high-performance ultra-wide-angle 17mm lens with an impressive minimum focusing distance. Now available as a "Premium Compact Prime" I series lens.

"Compact, lightweight and high-performance ultra-wide-angle lens". Using the latest technology, the 17mm has been created without compromise, despite this challenging design concept. Its wide-angle of view creates impactful landscape images with a unique perspective and, thanks to its minimum close focusing distance of 12cm, the lens can be enjoyed in a variety of alternative ways, including close-up photography and handheld selfies.

The optical design has been created exclusively for mirrorless camera systems, which helps reduce lens flare and ghosting that results in excellent image rendering. The all-metal lens barrel highlights SIGMA's craftsmanship and attention to detail, making the SIGMA 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary a pleasure to use on every shoot.

[Key Features]

1. "Ultra-wide-angle lens" that matches the optical performance standards set by the SIGMA Contemporary line of lenses.

The lens construction consists of two SLD glass elements and three aspherical lens elements. Aspherical lenses are used for both the front and rear optics. This not only keeps the size of the lens compact but also helps with correcting lens aberrations. As a result, the lens features a 55mm filter thread (which is smaller than comparable lenses of similar focal lengths) which makes it easy to change filters between SIGMA I series lenses that share the same filter size.* Its construction also helps minimize flare and ghosting that is commonly found in ultra-wide-angle lenses, creating clear images in any environment. This is a lens with truly modern performance, thanks to the advanced processing and production technologies at SIGMA's only production facility in Aizu.

*In addition to the 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary, I series lenses with a 55mm filter thread include the 24mm F3.5 DG DN | Contemporary, 45mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary, and 90mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary (as of April 2023).

A highlight of using the 17mm is the impressive minimum focusing distance of 12cm. Capture close-up macro style images in remarkable detail with expansive backgrounds. It is also suitable for selfies and vlogging, where items need to be shown at an arms-reach. A quiet, high-speed stepping motor drives the AF delivering fast and accurate results in both stills and video.

2. Beyond "beautiful pictures" – the value provided by the SIGMA's I series

The SIGMA I series features full-frame compatible lenses that offer new value to mirrorless systems. The combination of superb optical performance with a level of compactness that is perfectly suited to smaller and lighter modern mirrorless cameras will bring you new opportunities for a perfect shot. SIGMA is aware that in today's world we have a wide range of camera choices, especially with the increase in mobile phone ownership. But with many photographers looking for something more than something that simply captures images when they choose to own a camera and lens, I series lenses offer the ultimate combination of superb optical performance, outstanding usability and compact form-factor. SIGMA's excellence in development and production technologies has been built up since our founding in 1961 and became increasingly sophisticated with the introduction of the SIGMA Global Vision brand in 2012. With this as a base, SIGMA has given careful thought to the quality of the products, the feeling of using it and the pleasure of owning it. This is how the I series was born.

3. Exceptional I series build quality with a compact form-factor

All I series lenses have an all-metal construction. The precision-cut aluminum parts not only give the barrel a sleek, stylish finish, but provide superb durability that improves the quality of the entire product. Metal materials are also used in internal structures that slide with the operation ring for added robustness. These high-precision components crafted with SIGMA's cutting-edge metalworking technology are also used in SIGMA's CINE LENS line-up for professional cinematographers and provide a tactile, ergonomic feel that make the lens a pleasure to use. What is more with the I series is that this high build quality is condensed into a palm-sized lens body. The SIGMA 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary is one of the smallest in the series. Combine with multiple I series lenses to create a remarkably compact shooting system that is lightweight and small in size.

Performance beyond expectations condensed into a small body.

50mm F2 joins the "Premium Compact Prime" I series.

The SIGMA 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary features high optical performance with a bright F2 aperture, that creates expressive images with a shallow depth of field and beautiful bokeh effects. With its compact size, this popular classic focal length is perfect for portraits, street and everyday photography. The lens has been designed to be used over a long period of time. Using that same technology that SIGMA used to create the SIGMA CINE lens range, the 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary uses an all-metal construct that is robust and provides a premium feel.

All these elements combine to create an exceptionally versatile lens that can be used in a variety of creative ways to create images in outstanding definition. Perfectly suited to new photographers looking to take the next step, professionals who require reliable lenses and photographers who prefer smaller full-frame lenses that offer the best optical quality.

[Key Features]

1. "Standard lens" that matches the optical performance standards set by the SIGMA Contemporary line of lenses.

SIGMA I series lenses are developed around the concept of "compact everyday lenses with outstanding image quality" and the SIGMA 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary is exactly that. It features high-quality optics in a compact size, perfect for a wide variety of photographic styles. Built from the ground up for mirrorless cameras, the SIGMA 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary is constructed using a single SLD glass element and three aspherical lens elements that are excellent at correcting various types of aberration for clear, high-definition images.

The conflicting ideals of improving optical performance while reducing body size and weight are achieved through the latest optical design, and the processing and production technologies at SIGMA's only production facility in Aizu.

The 50mm focal length is mostly known for portrait photography, so careful consideration was taken when designing the lens, focusing on the smoothness of the bokeh created by the F2 aperture. Its optical design gives smooth transitions from in-focus to out-of-focus areas, and helps minimize flare and ghosting caused by backlit environments. The quiet stepping motor provides quick, reliable autofocusing for both stills and video.

2. Expanding the I series lineup. "Creating pictures that are beyond beautiful".

The SIGMA I series features full-frame compatible lenses that offer new value to mirrorless systems. The combination of superb optical performance with a level of compactness that is perfectly suited to smaller and lighter modern mirrorless cameras will bring you new opportunities for a perfect shot.
