Santa Rosa, CA – September 11, 2014 – Think Tank Photo’s newest “About A Photograph” short film features the disturbing story behind Getty photographer John Moore’s stark image of Ebola virus victims who await their fate in a clinic waiting room in the Liberia’s capital of Monrovia.

“It was a horrific scene. There were people who were healthy and people who were unhealthy all in the same rooms,” said Moore. "In fact, when I went back there were people who had died overnight in the same room with living people.”

Moore continued, “I don’t do these things because they are dangerous, I do them because they are difficult.”

John Moore is a senior staff photographer for Getty Images. He has been honored four times from World Press Photo for both domestic and international work. The Overseas Press Club awarded him the prestigious Robert Capa Gold Medal for his work in Pakistan and the John Faber Award for his work in the refugee camps in Zaire. Both Pictures of the Year International and the National Press Photographers Association have named him the photographer of the year. He was part of the Associated Press team that won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for coverage of the war in Iraq and, as a Getty staffer, was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer for Breaking News Photography for his coverage of the Arab Spring.

Moore joined Getty Images in 2005 based in Islamabad, Pakistan until July 2008. During that time he worked throughout South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and particularly in Pakistan, where he courageously captured the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1990, Moore joined the Associated Press, first based in Nicaragua, then India, South Africa, Mexico and Egypt. He has photographed in more than 75 countries on five continents

“Telling Robin Williams to stay still was almost impossible,” said Hanashiro. “I always go into these celebrity shoots a little nervous, even though I’ve been doing this for 25 years. I always appreciated him making me feel relaxed. And when I’m relaxed I can make a whole lot better photography.”

Hanashiro continues, “I remember the first time I met him. I knocked on the door of the hotel room and he answered the door, which was very surprising. He just looked at me and asked, ‘Who might you be?’ And he just laughed. Robin Williams was the best of the best.”

“It’s sad that he’s gone because he was such a great character, a person who made us all laugh and all cry. I got to admit that when I’d heard he’d passed away, I was, very, very sad. Not only because he was such a great subject, but a great person to be around.”

For over two decades, Hanashiro has been the West Coast staff photographer for USA TODAY, the country’s largest general interest daily newspaper. He has covered every major sports event imaginable from the Super Bowl to the Final Four to the World Series to the NBA Finals. He has also covered 12 Olympic Games. Hanashiro’s duties for “The Nation’s Newspaper” also include coverage of the entertainment industry, making portraits of many of the world’s leading actors, directors, and musicians. He also covers the major awards shows, including the Grammy, Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. 4/15/2014 - In this week's Pulitzer announcements, John Tlumacki's photograph from the Boston Marathon bombing was named as a finalist in the Breaking News Photography category. The photograph was also part of the Boston Globe's Pulitzer Prize winning Breaking News Reporting team coverage. In our newest About A Photograph video, located at blog.thinktankphoto.com/about-a-photograph, he describes his instincts as a photojournalist to run towards the bomb instead of away.

In the video, Tlumacki remembers: “I just reacted instinctively and ran forward. As I ran forward the second bomb went off and that’s the picture I made of the three police officers reacting to the runner, Bill Iffrig, who fell on the ground in front of me…I wasn’t really thinking about my safety at that point. I just think it’s my training as a journalist.”

Tlumacki has photographed 20 marathons during his 33 year career as a Globe general assignment staff photographer. He was named the National Press Photographers Association's Best Of Photojournalism 2014 Photojournalist of the Year (Larger Markets). He was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in photography for his coverage of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and he was the Boston Press Photographers Association Photographer of the Year in 2011 and then again last year, in 2013.

In its latest "About A Photograph" release, Think Tank Photo features Al Diaz's touching image of Pamela Rauseo performing CPR [successfully] on an infant alongside Miami’s State Road 836.

Think Tank Photo’s newest About A Photograph video features the story behind photojournalist John Stanmeyer’s award-winning photo of African migrants on the shore of Djibouti City at night, their phones raised in an attempt to capture an inexpensive signal from neighboring Somalia. The international jury of the 57th annual World Press Photo Contest recently selected his image as the World Press Photo of the Year 2013. In the video, Stanmeyer relates that, “This is a perfect example of modern day migration and the issues of modern day migration and our ability and desire to reconnect with our loved ones back home…It’s about hope.”

Jillian Edelstein, jury member from the UK/South Africa said: “It’s a photo that is connected to so many other stories—it opens up discussions about technology, globalization, migration, poverty, desperation, alienation, humanity. John Stanmeyer, born in Illinois, is a founding member of the VII photo agency. Living in the Far East for over 12 years, he has witnessed throughout that time nearly every major historical event in Asia, photographing the rapid changes taking place throughout the entire region. Working globally, he has focused on the plight of refugees from the Ugandan civil war, spent months chronicling the effects of the 2004 Tsunami and documented the mental healthcare crises in Asia.

He has been the recipient of numerous honors including the prestigious Robert Capa award, named Magazine Photographer of the Year, awarded numerous World Press, Picture of the Year and NPPA awards and in 2008 received the National Magazine Award for this in-depth essay on the global Malaria epidemic.

Said Tyler about shooting in nature, “It’s almost never as I envision it. It’s always close to that. But there’s some moving element that makes it a struggle. Our latest "About A Photograph" film features photojournalist Nick Ut’s story behind his iconic Vietnam War image of a terrified young girl, Phan Thi Kim Phuc, escaping a South Vietnamese napalm bomb attack.

In the video, Ut recounts how he had to make an ethical choice between capturing images as a photojournalist and helping this severely burned girl. In the end he did both. He captured one of the most impactful war images in history and was able to take the burn victim forty minutes to Cu Chi hospital.

Warning: The video (seen here) shows the iconic Vietnam War image of a naked girl running from the remnants of a napalm attack. While the largely ubiquitous image is not something we'd usually share on the site, I decided the laregly unkown backstory of Nick Ut saving the young girl's life was certainly worth sharing. [Sean]

Think Tank Photo released this video in their "About A Photograph" a couple of weeks ago and I simply missed it. I'm glad I stumbled across it this morning. The video reiterates the old adage, "Persistence pays off."

Santa Rosa, CA – October 02, 2013 – Think Tank Photo today released the eighth in its "About A Photograph" video series. In it, photojournalist David Burnett, described by American Photo magazine as one of the "100 Most Important People in Photography," narrates the fascinating story behind his disturbing images of victims of Chilean president Augusto Pinochet’s brutal dictatorship. The video interview can be found at http://aboutaphotograph.com.

Burnett sensed the "sixtieth of a second" when the eyes of "The Man In The Picture" (as the photo soon became known) caught Burnett’s and history was captured. The image ran in magazines and newspapers around the globe soon thereafter.

"There can be a moment when a photograph almost transcends the public moment and becomes something very private within that space," said Burnett. "I’d love to take a picture of him now. But more importantly, I’d love to shake his hand."

Burnett is a photojournalist with more than four decades of work covering the news, the people, and visual tempo of our age. He is co-founder of Contact Press Images, the New York based photojournalism agency now entering its 37th year. In July, 2011, David worked with Photographers for Hope to create a workshop for homeless news vendors in Glasgow, Scotland. He is also collaborating with the group "Facing Change - Documenting America" which is trying to recreate a modern version of the FSA, and take a serious look at the issues facing the country during these turbulent economic times.
