Airport International LE Classic
In celebration of its 10th Anniversary, Think Tank Photo will be releasing a limited edition version of its most popular rolling carry-on camera case, the Airport International LE Classic. Crafted with genuine, full-grain leather accents and panels, this classic version represents everything the Think Tank brand is known for: premium quality, innovative design and long-lasting durability. The Airport International LE Classic carry-on roller lets photographers legally store their bodies, lenses, and accessories in overhead bins or under the seats of international carriers. For added security, it features front-pocket and main compartment combination locks and a cable from a secret rear hatch that allow it to be secured to posts, trees, and other immovable objects.
Airport International accommodates up to a 500mm f/4 lens unattached, additional smaller lenses and up to two gripped DSLR camera bodies, and other photography accessories. TSA approved combination locks secure the main compartment zipper sliders.
“The Airport International LE Classic is most definitely a limited edition bag. In celebration of our founding 10 years ago in my garage, we have added such one-time highlights as full-grain leather accents and panels,” said Doug Murdoch, Think Tank Photo’s founder and lead designer. “The Airport International LE Classic is extremely useful for wedding and commercial photographers who need quick access to their gear and who are concerned about gear security while shooting remotely.”

Santa Rosa, CA – September 11, 2014 – Think Tank Photo’s newest “About A Photograph” short film features the disturbing story behind Getty photographer John Moore’s stark image of Ebola virus victims who await their fate in a clinic waiting room in the Liberia’s capital of Monrovia.
“It was a horrific scene. There were people who were healthy and people who were unhealthy all in the same rooms,” said Moore. "In fact, when I went back there were people who had died overnight in the same room with living people.”
Moore continued, “I don’t do these things because they are dangerous, I do them because they are difficult.”
John Moore is a senior staff photographer for Getty Images. He has been honored four times from World Press Photo for both domestic and international work. The Overseas Press Club awarded him the prestigious Robert Capa Gold Medal for his work in Pakistan and the John Faber Award for his work in the refugee camps in Zaire. Both Pictures of the Year International and the National Press Photographers Association have named him the photographer of the year. He was part of the Associated Press team that won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for coverage of the war in Iraq and, as a Getty staffer, was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer for Breaking News Photography for his coverage of the Arab Spring.
Moore joined Getty Images in 2005 based in Islamabad, Pakistan until July 2008. During that time he worked throughout South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and particularly in Pakistan, where he courageously captured the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1990, Moore joined the Associated Press, first based in Nicaragua, then India, South Africa, Mexico and Egypt. He has photographed in more than 75 countries on five continents

8/27/2014 – Photography is easy. Good photography is hard. To aid aspiring and experienced photographers in honing their art and craft, we launched a weekly blog column, “Ask the Pros,” that solicits insights from top pro photographers.
The column is located at: blog.thinktankphoto.com/2014/08/thinktankphoto-asks-the-pros-photo-q-and-a/
The first column asks 14 leading professional photographers, "What techniques do you use with people who don't want to be photographed?" Their answers run the gamut, from “I avoid photographing people who do not want to be photographed” to “flattery goes a long way.”
“Ask the Pros” features luminaries from all fields of professional photography. They include David Burnett (named one of the "100 Most Important People in Photography"), Pulitzer-winning photojournalists Al Diaz, Deanne Fitzmaurice, and Vince Laforet, photojournalist, member of VII Photo, and a National Geographic contributor Ed Kashi, street photographer Alex Coghe, architectural and design photographers Dallas Dahms and Mike Kelley, digital innovator and eclectic shooter Falcon, photography publisher Jose Atunes, documentary and humanitarian photographers Ziv Koren, Melissa Lyttle and Ami Vitale, and commercial photographer Nathan Pask.
“It’s fascinating how just one insight can emancipate a photographer. By posing the same question to these photography luminaries, who come from such different perspectives, ‘Ask the Pros’ surrounds the answer with an immense amount of knowledge learned the hard way,” said Deanne Fitzmaurice, Think Tank Photo co-founder. “Our hope is that the richness and depth of their answers will accelerate other photographers’ learning curves.”
Think Tank Photo’s newest About A Photograph video features USA Today photographer Robert Hanashiro’s remembrances of shooting images of the late Robin Williams.
August 17, 2014 – Think Tank Photo’s newest About A Photograph video features USA Today photographer Robert Hanashiro’s remembrances of shooting images of the late Robin Williams, as well as actor Dustin Hoffman. About A Photograph can be found at blog.thinktankphoto.com/about-a-photograph
“Telling Robin Williams to stay still was almost impossible,” said Hanashiro. “I always go into these celebrity shoots a little nervous, even though I’ve been doing this for 25 years. I always appreciated him making me feel relaxed. And when I’m relaxed I can make a whole lot better photography.”
Hanashiro continues, “I remember the first time I met him. I knocked on the door of the hotel room and he answered the door, which was very surprising. He just looked at me and asked, ‘Who might you be?’ And he just laughed. Robin Williams was the best of the best.”
“It’s sad that he’s gone because he was such a great character, a person who made us all laugh and all cry. I got to admit that when I’d heard he’d passed away, I was, very, very sad. Not only because he was such a great subject, but a great person to be around.”
For over two decades, Hanashiro has been the West Coast staff photographer for USA TODAY, the country’s largest general interest daily newspaper. He has covered every major sports event imaginable from the Super Bowl to the Final Four to the World Series to the NBA Finals. He has also covered 12 Olympic Games. Hanashiro’s duties for “The Nation’s Newspaper” also include coverage of the entertainment industry, making portraits of many of the world’s leading actors, directors, and musicians. He also covers the major awards shows, including the Grammy, Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. For the past four years Hanashiro has been one of just four photographers covering the Academy Awards from backstage.

4/15/2014 - In this week's Pulitzer announcements, John Tlumacki's photograph from the Boston Marathon bombing was named as a finalist in the Breaking News Photography category. The photograph was also part of the Boston Globe's Pulitzer Prize winning Breaking News Reporting team coverage. In our newest About A Photograph video, located at blog.thinktankphoto.com/about-a-photograph, he describes his instincts as a photojournalist to run towards the bomb instead of away.
In the video, Tlumacki remembers: “I just reacted instinctively and ran forward. As I ran forward the second bomb went off and that’s the picture I made of the three police officers reacting to the runner, Bill Iffrig, who fell on the ground in front of me…I wasn’t really thinking about my safety at that point. I just think it’s my training as a journalist.”
Tlumacki has photographed 20 marathons during his 33 year career as a Globe general assignment staff photographer. He was named the National Press Photographers Association's Best Of Photojournalism 2014 Photojournalist of the Year (Larger Markets). He was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in photography for his coverage of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and he was the Boston Press Photographers Association Photographer of the Year in 2011 and then again last year, in 2013.
In its latest "About A Photograph" release, Think Tank Photo features Al Diaz's touching image of Pamela Rauseo performing CPR [successfully] on an infant alongside Miami’s State Road 836.

Think Tank Photo’s newest About A Photograph video features the story behind photojournalist John Stanmeyer’s award-winning photo of African migrants on the shore of Djibouti City at night, their phones raised in an attempt to capture an inexpensive signal from neighboring Somalia. The international jury of the 57th annual World Press Photo Contest recently selected his image as the World Press Photo of the Year 2013. The video can be found at http://blog.thinktankphoto.com/about-a-photograph/
In the video, Stanmeyer relates that, “This is a perfect example of modern day migration and the issues of modern day migration and our ability and desire to reconnect with our loved ones back home…It’s about hope.”
Jillian Edelstein, jury member from the UK/South Africa said: “It’s a photo that is connected to so many other stories—it opens up discussions about technology, globalization, migration, poverty, desperation, alienation, humanity. It’s a very sophisticated, powerfully nuanced image. It is so subtly done, so poetic, yet instilled with meaning, conveying issues of great gravity and concern in the world today.”
John Stanmeyer, born in Illinois, is a founding member of the VII photo agency. Living in the Far East for over 12 years, he has witnessed throughout that time nearly every major historical event in Asia, photographing the rapid changes taking place throughout the entire region. Working globally, he has focused on the plight of refugees from the Ugandan civil war, spent months chronicling the effects of the 2004 Tsunami and documented the mental healthcare crises in Asia.
He has been the recipient of numerous honors including the prestigious Robert Capa award, named Magazine Photographer of the Year, awarded numerous World Press, Picture of the Year and NPPA awards and in 2008 received the National Magazine Award for this in-depth essay on the global Malaria epidemic.
Think Tank Photo's “About a Photograph video series features some of the world’s leading photographers recounting the stories behind their images that captured global attention. Each short video focuses on the forces that led up to that perfect moment in time when subject, story, setting, equipment, and photographer converged.
From Think Tank Photo:
Our newest About A Photograph video features the story behind noted adventure photographer and cinematographer Tyler Stableford’s breathtaking image inside a rare cave in lceland's Langjökull Glacier. In the video, Tyler relates how potentially dangerous it was to shoot inside a moving glacier.
Said Tyler about shooting in nature, “It’s almost never as I envision it. It’s always close to that. But there’s some moving element that makes it a struggle. Most photographers in nature continue to strive because they never know when that beautiful graphic moment is going to happen. That’s the magic of photography for me.”
Based in Aspen, CO, Tyler has earned a worldwide clientele for his work. Men's Journal named him "One of the Seven World's Greatest Adventure Photographers,” and he is one of Canon’s prestigious Explorers of Light. Tyler has won numerous photo and filmmaking awards from The Art Directors Club, Communication Arts, PDN, American Photo and The International Photography Awards, among others.

Our newest About A Photograph video features the story behind noted music photographer Adam Elmakias’s poignant image of Suicide Silence’s late vocalist Mitch Lucker and his daughter in a private moment together backstage. In the video, Elmakias narrates how this photo altered not only his creative viewpoint, but his understanding of the role of photojournalism in creating and capturing events for history. The video can be found at http://blog.thinktankphoto.com/about-a-photograph/
In Adam’s words: “I sort of took the moment for granted. But I had never had someone pass away after taking their photograph. It opened up a whole new area for me. A lot of the artists I work with wonder, ‘What is this photograph going to do for us in 20 years? It doesn’t mean we have to publish or use it now, but can save it so that we have everything we’ve done documented.’”
Adam is a music and travel photographer based out of San Diego California. He has spent the good majority of the past five years traveling with bands on the road. They include A Day to Remember, Alan Ashby, All Time Low, Neil Westfall, Of Mice & Men, and Pierce the Veil.

11/18/2013 - We just introduced a retro-inspired alternative to conventional and obvious laptop cases for carrying expensive technical devices discreetly—the Retrospective Laptop Case. Inspired by the popularity of the company's inconspicuous Retrospective canvas shoulder bag series, these new laptop cases are available in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes and three colors: Pinestone or Blue Slate in sand-washed 100% premium cotton canvas, or Black in polyspun.
The Retrospective 13L and Retrospective 15L laptop cases’ retro look mixes "Old-School" with "New-School" that is a throwback to the days when bags where visually simple but highly functional. These new laptop cases are designed for today’s laptop owners whose personal style resonates with classic materials and design, as well as wanting their electronics to be readily accessible yet well-concealed.
Like all shoulder bags in the series, the Retrospective Laptop Cases are built with durability and comfort in mind. They feature premium quality YKK RC Fuse zippers, metal hardware, leather accents, and a cushioned and padded nonslip shoulder strap that can be positioned for all-day comfort. A breakthrough in design is the smooth back-panel that reduces wear and tear on clothing. Besides carrying and concealing expensive laptops, the rear pocket is designed to hold a Tablet and the main compartment easily fits file folders, books or binders. An easily accessible front organizer features a key tether with pockets for pens, business cards and small accessories. Treated with a water resistant coating, Retrospective Laptop Cases offers double protection from the elements with a seam-sealed rain cover.
Another attractive aspect of the Retrospective collection is the price. In fact, distressed canvas bags of comparable quality are priced up to $300 whereas the Retrospective 13L is $149.75 and Retrospective 15L is $159.75.

Our latest "About A Photograph" film features photojournalist Nick Ut’s story behind his iconic Vietnam War image of a terrified young girl, Phan Thi Kim Phuc, escaping a South Vietnamese napalm bomb attack.
In the video, Ut recounts how he had to make an ethical choice between capturing images as a photojournalist and helping this severely burned girl. In the end he did both. He captured one of the most impactful war images in history and was able to take the burn victim forty minutes to Cu Chi hospital.
You can read more on what happened that day, here - bit.ly/1idL2g9.
Warning: The video (seen here) shows the iconic Vietnam War image of a naked girl running from the remnants of a napalm attack. While the largely ubiquitous image is not something we'd usually share on the site, I decided the laregly unkown backstory of Nick Ut saving the young girl's life was certainly worth sharing. [Sean]

Santa Rosa, CA – October 02, 2013 – Think Tank Photo today released the eighth in its "About A Photograph" video series. In it, photojournalist David Burnett, described by American Photo magazine as one of the "100 Most Important People in Photography," narrates the fascinating story behind his disturbing images of victims of Chilean president Augusto Pinochet’s brutal dictatorship. The video interview can be found at http://aboutaphotograph.com.
Burnett sensed the "sixtieth of a second" when the eyes of "The Man In The Picture" (as the photo soon became known) caught Burnett’s and history was captured. The image ran in magazines and newspapers around the globe soon thereafter.
"There can be a moment when a photograph almost transcends the public moment and becomes something very private within that space," said Burnett. "I’d love to take a picture of him now. But more importantly, I’d love to shake his hand."
Burnett is a photojournalist with more than four decades of work covering the news, the people, and visual tempo of our age. He is co-founder of Contact Press Images, the New York based photojournalism agency now entering its 37th year. In July, 2011, David worked with Photographers for Hope to create a workshop for homeless news vendors in Glasgow, Scotland. He is also collaborating with the group "Facing Change - Documenting America" which is trying to recreate a modern version of the FSA, and take a serious look at the issues facing the country during these turbulent economic times.
