From Sony Electronics Inc.:

Sony Electronics Launches the FR7, the World’s First*1 Pan-Tilt-Zoom Camera to Combine a Full-frame Image Sensor, Lens Interchangeability, and Remote Shooting Functionality

Sony’s Cinema Line PTZ camera opens new creative and cinematic possibilities for content creators, from filmmakers to live event or music video producers

LOS ANGELES, CA – September 6, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. announces today the latest addition to its Cinema Line, the ILME-FR7, an E-mount interchangeable lens camera with a full-frame image sensor and built-in pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) functionality. Its versatile remote control and cinematic features open creative possibilities in studio, live production and filmmaking settings.

A high-performance full-frame image sensor and the expressive scope of Sony’s extensive E-mount lens*2 lineup work with remote pan/tilt/zoom control, high flexibility in zoom capability and wide angle shooting to break through location and space limitations. It also offers the cinematic look and operability that have made Sony digital cinema cameras push the boundaries of the filmmaking industry, plus versatile connectivity and efficient multi camera workflow support.

“The cinematic look and feel is rapidly becoming the norm in broadcasting and live production as it opens up new ways to tell a narrative,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “In parallel, over the last 2 years, we’ve seen a steep rise in content created remotely or in small locations where access is difficult. At Sony, we are always listening to our customers. We are thrilled to announce the FR7 that combines the flexibility of a standard PTZ camera with stunning visuals through advanced cinematic features.”

Uncompromised Image Quality in a PTZ Form Factor

The FR7 features a back-illuminated 35mm full-frame CMOS image sensor Exmor R™ with approximately 10.3 effective megapixels and wide 15+ stop latitude*3 in a pan tilt zoom (PTZ) camera for the first time. In addition to wide dynamic range, low noise, and cinematic full frame bokeh, this amazing sensor also delivers high sensitivity that allows ISO to be expanded up to 409,600*4 when shooting in low light.

The FR7 features Sony’s E-mount and can mount a wide range of E-mount lenses*2, including the G Master™ series with stunning resolution and bokeh effect. A choice of focal lengths ranging from 12 mm to 1200 mm*5 gives users comprehensive creative control.

A number of Cinema Line features are built into the camera to deliver a cinematic look and feel including:

The Sensitivity setting allows ISO to be expanded up to 409,600*4 when shooting in low light.

A 15+ stop latitude*3 allows smooth highlights and low noise levels.

A number of preset scene files are included including S-Cinetone for natural mid-tones that are essential to healthy-looking skin color, plus soft colors and gorgeous highlights. Since the target look can be created while shooting, time can be saved in post-production. In the Cine EI mode, base sensitivity can be set to either ISO 800 or ISO 12800 to match lighting conditions and to minimize noise while maintaining a consistent look. This mode is ideal for post-production, as it allows the use of Sony’s original S-Log3 gamma, wide S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine color spaces.

Shooting up to 120fps 4K (QFHD) and 240 fps FHD*6 slow-motion is possible, again creating that emotional possibility offered by a cinematic look.

Easy Operation for Storytelling from New Angles

With a new dedicated web application, pan, tilt, zoom, focus, record, playback, and all camera settings can be intuitively controlled from a tablet or computer web browser. Multiple people can monitor FR7 footage remotely at the same time. Multi camera monitoring is also enabled, allowing multiple cameras to be viewed remotely on one device. With its integrated remotely controllable pan/tilt mechanism, the FR7 can be mounted on a tripod, on a ceiling with the dedicated CIB-PCM1, or in other locations with limited access so that subjects can be unobtrusively followed and recorded from unique viewpoints. It is also compatible with Sony’s RM-IP500 remote controller*7 for multi-camera production, expanding creative potential while reducing the need for dedicated staff in production studios and other shooting situations. A single RM-IP500 unit can remotely control up to 100 PTZ cameras and provide precious joystick-controlled pan, tilt, and zoom operation. ?

The supplied infrared remote controller will also support the FR7’s simple operation.

Variable PTZ Movements for Smooth Camera Work

Pan and tilt speed can be continuously varied from 0.02 degrees per second to 60 degrees per second, supporting a wide range of stable and smooth camera movements. The pan angle range is from -170° to +170°, and the tilt angle range is from -30° to +195°.

Up to 100 Preset Camera Positions

The FR7 can memorize up to 100 camera position presets.*8 The built-in web application and optional RM-IP500 remote controller allow up to 100 camera position presets to be recalled. Presets include camera direction, zoom, and focus, and can be recalled at the touch of a button.

The FR7 will also support S700 protocol via Ethernet, enabling control of this product from Sony’s Remote Control Panel (RCP) and Master Setup Unit (MSU) with a firmware update*9.

Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking

Fast Hybrid AF and pan/tilt/zoom functionalities combine to focus on static or fast-moving subjects precisely and smoothly over a wide area, to avoid blurred images, even when a shallow depth of field is used.

The integrated BIONZ XR™ engine realizes detection performance for pinpoint eye focus even when subjects are looking at steep angles, allowing the operator to concentrate on composing the best shot. Touch Focus can be used to initiate focusing with Real-time Tracking on the desired subject when using the FR7’s web application, with Real-time Eye AF if an eye is detected.

Sony’s Built-in Electronically Controlled Variable ND Filter

The built-in electronic variable ND filter allows seamless ND adjustment. An Auto ND function keeps exposure constant by automatically adjusting the ND filter to match changing light. Remote control is also possible, allowing exposure control at a distance from the camera.

Versatile Interfaces for Various Production Workflows

The FR7 is built to integrate and adapt to many workflow scenarios, from simple plug and play to more complex high-end productions, thanks to a comprehensive selection of video inputs and outputs, IP streaming, power supply, and synchronization with other devices.

Internal XAVC Recording and External RAW Output

A rare feature in a PTZ camera, the FR7 also features dual media slots that support CFexpress Type A and SDXC memory cards. The ability to record high-quality XAVC-I footage with metadata makes the FR7 an excellent choice for a wide variety of video production applications.

CFexpress Type A cards are particularly well suited to high bitrate 4K movie production, with high-speed write capability that ensures stable recording of high volume, high frame rate data. Simultaneous recording, relay recording, interval recording, and proxy recording are also supported. The SDI output can deliver a 16-bit RAW signal to a compatible external recorder (sold separately).

Professional Video and Audio Interface

HDMI Type A and 12G-SDI connectors are provided for video output as well as optical output*10 for long transmission.

The AUDIO IN (XLR type 5-pin) connector will receive signal from an external microphone or audio device. AUDIO CH-1 and CH-2 use a single connector.

Ethernet Connectivity

Camera control, video and audio transfer, and power supply can also be carried out via a single LAN cable, simplifying cabling requirements.

The FR7 LAN (network) connector supports a variety of streaming protocols, including RTSP, SRT and NDI ® |HX*11, perfect for working in an IP based environment.

The FR7 can be powered from an external PoE++ (Power over Ethernet Plus Plus)*12 device via a standard network cable, eliminating the need for separate power supply cabling.

Multicamera Production Synchronization

The Timecode IN connector receives timecode for synchronization with an external device, while the GENLOCK receives synchronization signals in multi camera setups.

Additionally, red/green tally lights are provided on the camera’s side panels, allowing performers and staff to easily identify the on-air and preview cameras in multi camera setups in studio or on location. ?

From Sony EU:

Sony Unlocks In-Camera Forgery-Proof Technology

Sony today announced the availability of its in-camera forgery proof photo technology for corporate business users. Using digital signatures processed at capture, Sony technology supports detection of any modification to an image, thus protecting it from fraudulent usage.

Following widespread issues with unauthorised editing and misconduct around digital photo data, Sony has developed forgery-proof technology, based on standard cryptography, for corporate users to safeguard images against future misuse.

With Sony’s in-camera signing mode activated, images are immediately cryptographically signed by the camera processor upon capture. Following this, any pixel modification, tampering or potential forgery will cancel the image signature, as the image manipulation will be detected by the customer’s own certificate server during examination.

Available on the Alpha 7 IV camera, with expansion to other models to be considered in sequence, this new functionality streamlines the lengthy process required from image submission through to verification, all with the addition of extra security.

The Alpha 7 IV also combines a 33.0MP full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor with BIONZ XR™ imaging engine to deliver high-speed processing and outstanding resolution.

Sony’s new forgery-proof signing mode ensures the secure creation and transmission of images based on cryptographic methods, as the fundamental need for certifying unmodified and secure images grows in many applications, across multiple industries.

This technology is particularly applicable for passports and ID verification but goes further in tackling image manipulation in the media, medical and law enforcement fields. For the insurance and construction sectors, this technology will offer a secure foundation for inspection and recording of damage.

Yasuo Baba, Director of Digital Imaging and European Product Marketing at Sony, commented: “It is Sony’s missions to strengthen business solutions with cutting-edge imagery technology and our in-camera digital signing is a real gamechanger for combatting image manipulation and forgery across multiple industries. Whilst appropriate adaptations for each industry need to be made, the digital signature is multilingual and can be used internationally, enabling organisations worldwide to streamline mandatory image signing with Sony technology.”

Currently compatible with the Alpha 7 IV, and subject to receipt of a license to enable Sony’s signing mode, this facility will be available for business users with plans for further model expansion to follow. In tandem, Sony will continue to examine how we can utilise our industry-leading imaging technology to further support enhanced security across multiple industries, with plans to expand the line-up of supported cameras hereafter.

Sony E 10-20mm F4 PZ G Lens

E PZ 10-20mm F4 G

Outstanding Image Quality and Dynamic Perspectives

The E PZ 10-20mm F4 G provides an extremely wide angle of view with a 10-20mm zoom range and a clean and clear image from corner to corner at all zoom settings. Three aspherical elements are ideally positioned to suppress field curvature and astigmatism, both of which are common problems in ultra-wide-angle lenses. The optical path also includes two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that effectively subdue chromatic aberration. An ED aspherical element further contributes to high resolution to the image edges.

A circular aperture and carefully designed control of spherical aberration work together to deliver naturally rendered G Lens bokeh that can contribute to impressive imagery.

The minimum autofocus distance is 8 inches (0.2 meters) with a maximum magnification of 0.14x, while minimum manual focus distance is 5 to 6.7 inches (0.13 to 0.17-meters) with a maximum magnification of 0.18x.

Advanced AF Performance for Both Stills and Video

With astonishing AF performance that gives still and video shooters unprecedented freedom, it uses two linear motors for focus drive, delivering fast, quiet AF.

Fast, reliable AF can smoothly track subjects when shooting high frame rate video, and reliably follow fast-moving subjects when shooting stills continuously at high speed. The new lens also reduces focus breathing so that angle-of-view variations are minimized for smooth, stable video.

Refined Expression and Control for Video

The E PZ 10-20mm F4 G features a new electronic power zoom system that ensures direct, responsive control and adjustable zoom speed. Even the subtlest zoom ring rotation is precisely detected and immediately converted to actual zoom operation. Users have extensive control of zoom speed and operation from the lens, the camera and even compatible remote controls to support creative opportunities not possible with other zoom lenses. Power zoom minimizes camera shake so that solo shooters can produce smooth, stable imagery. Moreover, the lens uses internal zoom and focus mechanisms, to maintain a constant length when zooming or focusing. Shifts in the lens’ center of gravity are minimal, making it a great choice for stable vlogging and gimbal-mounted video shooting.

A constant F4 at all focal settings makes it possible for the lens to maintain stable image quality when recording. In addition, buttons can be assigned on compatible bodies for convenient custom zoom control[ii].

Unequalled Mobility and Handling

The E PZ 10-20mm F4 G is 20% lighter than its predecessor (SEL1018), making it the smallest and lightesti lens in its class with a total weight of just 6.3 ounces (178 grams). The compact power zoom lens E PZ 10-20mm F4 G is designed to maximize control and versatility for video as well as stills with a focus ring, zoom ring and zoom lever. A customizable focus hold button and focus mode switch have been thoughtfully thaincorporated to easily adapt in changing shooting conditions. Users can attach 62mm screw-on filters, such as variable ND filters, for more creative control. The lens has also been designed to be dust and moisture resistant[iii] to provide extra reliability.

Sony E 15mm F1.4 G Lens

E 15mm F1.4 G

G Lens Resolution and Beautiful Bokeh

The E 15mm F1.4 G lens has a wide 15mm view with impressive G lens resolution. Three aspherical elements in an advanced optical design effectively compensate for distortion and deliver excellent corner-to-corner resolution, despite the lens’ wide 15 mm angle of view. The addition of one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and one Super ED glass element effectively suppresses chromatic aberration.

The large F1.4 maximum aperture, precisely controlled spherical aberration and circular aperture mechanism make it easy to produce smooth, background bokeh for an artist effect.

With a minimum focusing distance of 6.7 inches (0.17 meters) and maximum magnification of 0.15x when manual focus is used[iv], impressive close-ups can be achieved for both stills and video.

AF Performance That Makes Full Use of Camera’s Speed Potential

Fast, precise, quiet AF and tracking for both stills and video is achieved with two advanced linear motors. This maximizes the speed potential of the camera body used to maintain accurate focus, even when focusing on fast-moving subjects.

The E 15mm F1.4 G uses Sony’s latest lens technology to reduce focus breathing so that angle-of-view variations are minimized for smooth, stable video. It also supports the breathing compensation function provided in compatible Alpha series bodies[v], minimizing breathing that can hinder post-shoot editing.

Excellent Control and Reliability for Stills and Video

Linear Response MF (manual focus) ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control is immediate, repeatable and precise.

By combining aspherical elements and an effective design, this lens achieves a large aperture and high resolution in a lightweight 7.7 ounces (219 grams) lens that is only 2.6 inches (66.6 mm) in diameter and 2.74 inches (69.5 mm) in length. Despite its compact dimensions, the E 15mm F1.4 G includes an aperture ring for direct, intuitive control with an aperture click switch that can be switched ON or OFF: ON for tactile feedback that lets the user “feel” the stops, or OFF for smooth, continuous, silent aperture control. The OFF setting enables smooth and stable control for video and is also ideal when silent operation is essential.

A focus hold button and focus mode switch are also provided for extra flexibility. The focus mode switch makes it possible to quickly switch between AF and MF as needed.

A wide angle of view, compact dimensions, and light weight make it ideal for shooting starry skies, landscapes, architecture, and indoor scenes, as well as subjects that require mobility such as sports.

The E 15mm F1.4 G is designed with dust and moisture resistance[vi] providing extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging conditions.

Sony E 11mm F1.8 Lens

E 11mm F1.8

Designed for Vlogging and Delivers Superb Resolution and Exquisite Bokeh

The E 11mm F1.8’s ultra-wide angle of view and compact size are ideal for vlogging which includes selfie-style recording at arm’s length as well as interior shots and images that make expressive use of depth of field. Three aspherical elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements achieve consistently high resolution in the entire image frame. The aspherical lenses are carefully positioned to compensate for distortion and deliver excellent corner-to-corner resolution even with the aperture wide open. The addition of ED glass further suppresses chromatic aberration and effectively reduces color fringing that is more likely to occur in the image periphery.

The large F1.8 maximum aperture of this lens makes it easy to achieve deep and natural background bokeh. Users can blur the background, so they stand out clearly when vlogging, or create beautiful blur in ultra-wide night scenes. Precisely controlled spherical aberration and a circular aperture mechanism further contribute to the smooth bokeh produced by this unique lens.

With a minimum focusing distance of 4.7 inches (0.12 meters) and maximum magnification of 0.2x[vii] the lens can deliver impressive close-ups for both stills and videos.

Optimized for Video

Two advanced linear motors provide fast, precise, quiet AF and tracking for both stills and video, maximizing the speed potential of the camera body used to reliably maintain accurate focus even on moving subjects. Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually so it feels immediate and precise.

Sony’s latest lens technology greatly reduces focus breathing[viii] and angle-of-view variations are minimized for smooth, stable video. The E 11mm F1.8’s ultra-wide 11 mm angle of view makes vlogging against a wide background easier than ever.

Compact and Lightweight with Exceptional Control and Reliability

Its small size and light weight are great for mobility and handling for lengthy walk-around shooting sessions. The E 11mm F1.8 boasts a large F1.8 maximum aperture in a compact, lightweight lens. It weighs 6.4 ounces (181 grams) and is only 2.6 inches (66 mm) in diameter and 2.26 inches (57.5 mm) in length - a perfect match for compact APS-C format bodies. The lens’ dust and moisture resistant design[ix] provides extra reliability.

Despite its compact dimensions, this lens offers flexible, intuitive control with features such as a focus hold button and focus mode switch. An alternative function chosen by the user can be assigned to the focus hold button from the body menu. The E 11mm F1.8 also accepts front filters, which is a feature that is often lacking on ultra-wide-angle lenses.

From Sony:

Sony Electronics Introduces New FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II, the World’s Smallest and Lightest F2.8 Standard Zoom Lens

Newest G Master™ Series Lens in Sony’s Mirrorless E-mount Lineup with Industry-leading Optical Design, Unique Actuator Technologies, Advanced Autofocus and More

SAN DIEGO, CA – April 27, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. announced today the 67th lens in its mirrorless E-mount lineup – the highly-anticipated, FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II (model – SEL2470GM2). Sony developed the world’s lightest F2.8 standard zoom lens[i] using its leading lens technology to deliver stunning resolution and beautiful bokeh known to Sony’s “G Master” series. The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is one of the most versatile lenses in the line-up and was created for photographers, videographers, and hybrid content creators.

“Six years have passed since Sony released the first 24-70 mm F2.8 G Master and in that time, our customers’ needs have changed,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “We are always listening to our community and have designed the new FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II around feedback from creators. Knowing the 24-70 mm focal length is extremely popular, it was imperative that we continue improving to bring our most advanced technology to such a critical lens in our customers’ kit. Today, we are thrilled to introduce the world’s smallest and lightest F2.8 standard zoom lens.”

Evolved Image Quality in a Zoom Lens that Rivals Prime Lenses[i]

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is great for a compact yet versatile set up and allows users to capture extremely sharp, detailed imagery for both stills and video. The new lens features high resolution across the frame—even with the aperture wide open. A completely redesigned optical path features five aspherical elements, including two high-precision XA (extreme aspherical) elements. The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II also includes two ED (extra-low dispersion) plus two Super ED glass elements. Combined with a new floating focus mechanism, the lens effectively controls chromatic aberration, astigmatism, distortion and coma so that outstanding resolution is achieved throughout the image area at all zoom and aperture settings.

Even when shooting in challenging lighting conditions, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II achieves excellent clarity by effectively subduing flare and ghosting. This is thanks to Sony’s original Nano AR Coating II, which produces a uniform anti-reflecting coating on the lens surface. The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II produces stunning bokeh throughout the zoom range with beautiful and almost perfectly circular bokeh with its advanced optical design and a newly developed 11-blade aperture unit.

In this new 24-70 mm design, this lens delivers outstanding close-up performance with a minimum focusing distance of 8.25 inches (0.21 meters) at 24 mm and 12 inches (0.30 meters) at 70 mm, and with a maximum magnification of 0.32x.

Fast and Precise Autofocus

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II achieves reliable focus by using four of Sony’s original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors, a floating focus mechanism and advanced lens control – even when shooting a fast-moving subject. In addition, the lens supports up to 30 fps[ii] continuous shooting for stills and 4K 120p video recording with autofocus.

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II enables full AF tracking performance even when shooting stills with the aperture stopped down, making it possible to use deeper depth of field to ensure that moving subjects remain in sharp focus when shooting continuously[iii]. The lens’ AF tracking performance while zooming is approximately two times better than the previous model[iv].

Refined Capabilities for Creative Filmmaking

With its constant F2.8 maximum aperture, astounding AF performance, versatile control, and solid reliability, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is designed for all types of video applications. The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II offers extremely quiet AF operation, thanks to the XD Linear Motors and a newly developed aperture unit. Using the latest lens technology, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II reduces focus breathing, focus shift and axial shift when zooming for smooth video footage. This lens also supports the breathing compensation function[v] provided in compatible Alpha series cameras.

As an added benefit for advanced video creation, the newest lens includes Linear Response MF (manual focus) that ensures high repeatability when focusing manually as the focus ring responds directly and repeatedly to subtle control. It also includes an aperture ring making manual aperture/iris control fast, direct, and easy. The dedicated iris ring enables click-less control to achieve smooth depth of field transitions.

Unrivaled Mobility

Designed to perfectly pair with Sony’s compact Alpha™ system E-mount cameras, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is the world’s smallest and lightesti 24-70 mm F2.8 zoom in its class and offers unprecedented shooting flexibility and freedom in a wide range of situations. The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II weighs just 24.6 ounces (695 grams), approximately 20% less (7 ounces) than the original 24-70 mm F2.8 G Master. The lens’ length has been reduced by 16 mm, and overall volume has been reduced by approximately 18%.

Reliability and Improved Control

The new FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II was developed based on feedback from professionals to offer even better control and usability than preceding models. This model includes:

  • Zoom smoothness switch to adjust zoom ring torque either Tight or Smooth
  • A newly added aperture ring with click ON/OFF switch and iris lock switch
  • Two customizable focus hold buttons
  • The focus ring that responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually
  • New lens hood design with opening to control circular polarizing filters (dia. 82mm)
  • The center of gravity back toward the mount for improved handling and operation
  • An updated dust and moisture resistant[vi] design provides extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging conditions. The buttons and switches are fitted with rubber gaskets, and a rubber ring seals the lens mount. The front lens element also features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints that become attached to the lens surface.

Pricing and Availability

The new FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II will be available in June for approximately $2,300.00 USD and $3,000.00 CAD and will be sold at a variety of Sony’s authorized dealers throughout North America.

From Sony:

Sony Electronics Announces the World’s Lightest Constant F4 Wide-Angle Power Zoom Lens, the Compact FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G™

Latest Addition to Sony’s E-mount Lens Line-Up Offers Evolved Image Quality and Operability for Full-Frame, Content Creation

SAN DIEGO, CA – March 22, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. today introduced the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G (model SELP1635G) – a wide-angle power zoom with evolved image quality, high performance AF (autofocus), and superior operability designed to meet the needs of today’s creators.

Developed with Sony’s vast expertise in lens design, the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G delivers outstanding performance and control in the world’s lightest[i] full-frame wide-angle power-zoom lens with a constant F4 aperture. The compact hybrid lens offers refined image quality, reliable G lens rendering, and industry-leading AF performance in a remarkably compact form factor that will appeal to both photo and video content creators. The FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G is ideal for everything from video production and vlogging to street and landscape photography, offering a variety of outstanding hybrid features such as incredible resolution, beautiful bokeh, and fast and precise AF. In addition, Sony’s newest lens offers advanced video features including an innovative power zoom function and refined capabilities such as an independent aperture control ring for even more creative control.

“The needs of our community are our top priority. As the content creation landscape continues to evolve and the worlds of still imaging and video continue to merge, we are constantly developing new products to meet this growing demand for hybrid content creators,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “With an advanced feature set and unmatched portability and flexibility, The FE PZ 16-35MM F4 G is perfectly designed to meet these evolving needs and ensure that today’s creators can realize their full vision.”

Evolved Image Quality for Photos and Videos

The FE PZ 16-35MM F4 G offers an extraordinary blend of breathtaking resolution and beautiful bokeh in a lightweight, compact lens. The optical path includes two AA (advanced aspherical) elements and a conventional aspherical element for an accurate image across the frame and 16-35mm zoom range. One Super ED (extra-low dispersion), and one ED glass element control chromatic aberration, while one ED aspherical element controls both chromatic and spherical aberration.

The use of AA elements in an advanced optical design also ensures excellent close-up performance throughout the zoom range – minimum focusing distance is 11 inches (0.28 meters) at 16mm and 9.5 inches (0.24 meters) at 35mm, with a maximum magnification of 0.23x. Additionally, an optimized coating effectively suppresses flare and ghosting for clear, well-defined images.

A circular aperture and carefully designed control of spherical aberration work together to deliver smooth, deep full-frame bokeh that adds visual impact.

High-Performance Autofocus

The FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G utilizes two XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear motors to control autofocus. The fast response and smooth, quiet operation of this system gives users new creative freedom. With Sony’s flagship Alpha 1 body it is possible to maintain accurate focus while shooting stills continuously at up to 30fps (frames per second)[i] and up to 120fps in movie mode.

Focus is especially critical when shooting slow motion 4K up to 120fps or 8K movies[ii]. The FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G works with Alpha cameras[iii] to reliably focus, and smoothly and silently track even fast-moving subjects. High-thrust XD Linear Motors, optimized optics, and responsive control add up to extraordinarily precise AF performance while keeping the lens compact with internal focus.

Advanced Features for Video Including a New Power Zoom Function

Based on feedback from leading creators, Sony specifically designed the FE PZ 16-35MM F4 G to deliver the refined imagery and control for today’s video needs. It features the latest lens technology to reduce focus breathing as well as focus and axial shift when zooming to ensure the highest quality video is easily captured. Focus, zoom, and aperture operation are also extremely quiet, greatly reducing noise and vibration that can interfere with movie recording.

For the first time in a Sony Alpha lens the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G uses four XD linear motors for the power zoom function in addition to the two XD linear motors used for focus. With this newly designed electronic power zoom system, the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G provides advanced control with the response and immediacy of non-powered manual zoom. It features both a zoom ring and a zoom lever with variable zoom speed that makes it easy to execute super-slow, fast or constant-speed change in focal length. Power zoom also minimizes camera shake or movement that can occur when operating a traditional zoom ring, and when used with compatible cameras, users can customize the zoom ring direction to suit shooting conditions. Zoom can also be controlled with the zoom lever on compatible cameras. Remote operation is also possible when using the Imaging Edge™ Mobile app[iv].

As an added benefit, users can operate buttons and controls on compatible cameras or accessories for convenient zoom control, including the GP-VPT2BT Bluetooth Grip and Remote Commander RMT-P1BT to remotely control zoom while the camera is mounted on a gimbal[v].

Furthermore, Linear Response MF ensures high repeatability as the focus ring responds directly and repeatably to subtle control when focusing manually. An aperture ring makes manual aperture/iris control fast, direct, and easy. The aperture ring includes a switch that can select aperture click stops that are ideal for photography or de-click operation for smooth iris control which is ideal for video.

Superior Mobility, Control and Reliability

World-class design and technology come together to deliver a compact, lightweight lens that also includes focus, zoom and aperture/iris rings and power zoom for unprecedented mobility and handling.

Using internal focus and internal zoom, the overall length of the lens remains constant during use for ideal balance and handling. Consistent balance makes this lens an ideal choice for gimbal-mounted movie shooting or use with a matte box. The focus ring can be easily controlled while shooting movies, and the adjacent focus and zoom rings are different sizes so they can be easily operated by feel while viewing the monitor.

More convenient features on the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G include the Iris Lock Switch that can be engaged to prevent the aperture ring from being accidentally moved between the auto and F4 - F22 settings and the customizable focus hold button for convenient control.

As the world’s lightest[i] F4 wide-angle power-zoom lens, the FE PZ 16-35MM F4 G weighs just 12 ounces (353 grams), 30% less than the Vario-Tessar T* FE 16–35 mm F4 ZA OSS and is just 3.17 inches x 3.47 inches (80.5mm x 88.1mm) in size with a filter diameter of f72mm. The lens also has a dust and moisture resistant design[vi], as well as a fluorine front element coating to keep it clean and reliable for outdoor use.

Pricing and Availability

The new FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G will be available in June 2022 for approximately $1,200.00 USD and $1,500.00 CAD. It will be sold at a variety of Sony’s authorized dealers throughout North America.

The Canadian Press Makes Sony Electronics its Exclusive Provider for Imaging Products

Canada’s Largest News Organization will outfit all journalists with Sony cameras and lenses

TORONTO, CANADA – January 31, 2022 – Sony Electronics, a global imaging leader, and The Canadian Press, Canada’s trusted national news agency, announced today that Sony would be the exclusive imaging products provider for the media company.

With more than 180 journalists, The Canadian Press produces real-time, bilingual multimedia news published by major digital, broadcast and print media. The switch to Sony will mean the photojournalists and videographers at The Canadian Press will use a variety of Sony cameras and lenses including the Sony Alpha 1 and Alpha 9 II products to quickly capture hundreds of powerful editorial photos and videos every day, ranging from large-scale global sporting events to local Canadian news, politics and lifestyle content.

“We are honored to announce this collaboration with The Canadian Press, a leader in delivering news and best-in-class multimedia content across Canada,” said Mark Saddleton, Sony Canada Country Head and Director of Sales. “The journalists at The Canadian Press have a front row seat for Canada’s biggest events across politics, sports and entertainment and we are delighted to support their visual storytelling.”

“Sony’s innovative technology takes the high quality of our visual journalism to a whole new level,” said Malcolm Kirk, President of The Canadian Press. “More than 600 media clients rely on our online CP Images archive as the go-to destination for contemporary and historic multimedia imagery of Canada’s people, places and events. That’s why we were looking for more than just a camera provider. We needed a true partner committed to helping us deliver first-rate visual journalism.”

“Sony’s commitment goes beyond providing lightweight equipment for handling fast action, hostile situations, and extreme weather conditions, without sacrificing image quality,” said Megan Leach, who manages visual journalists at The Canadian Press and heads up the planning and packaging department. “Our journalists truly appreciate how the silent camera performance allows them to stay behind the scenes, but more importantly, that Sony is responsive to our feedback.”

“From the outset, they’ve taken a relationship-driven approach to the upgrade, which will bring a unified look to our coverage since all our staff photographers and reporters will be shooting with the same brand of cameras for photos and videos for the first time “They understood the ongoing training and support was as critical as the technology. We’re thrilled to have their support as we expand our visual coverage and meet the future needs of our industry.”

The roll out of Sony imaging kits to Canadian Press journalists is already in progress, with distribution planned throughout early 2022.
