From Sigma:

2019.10.04 – SIGMA Corporation is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of interchangeable lenses for the Canon EF-M mount digital camera series with APS-C image sensors. SIGMA will gradually introduce the lenses as members of the Contemporary line.

The new Canon EF-M mount models will feature a newly and exclusively developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed. In addition, these lenses will be compatible with Servo AF and lens aberration correction.

The lineup will include the Contemporary line set of three prime lenses 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm. While retaining the compact, lightweight and outstanding image quality concepts of the Contemporary line, this new large-aperture lens series covering from wide to mid-tele angle provides the amount of bokeh and admirable brightness expected from F1.4 to be enjoyed on Canon EF-M mount cameras.

Key features

  • Impressively compact construction with image quality rivaling SIGMA’s Art line.
To achieve such a compact construction, the lens design is considered based on the capabilities of the camera body function to correct peripheral light amount and distortion. A compactness and lightweight construction combined with superb image quality is achieved.
  • Smooth AF ideal for video shooting
The combination of optical design for video AF and use of the stepping motor enables smooth and quiet autofocus. This lens is also compatible with the camera’s Face + Tracking AF.
  • Data loaded for compatibility with in-camera aberration correction
The lenses will be fully compatible* with in-camera aberration correction, which includes corrections for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations and distortion. By matching corrections to the optical characteristics of the lens, this function takes image quality to an even higher level.
  • Available Mount Conversion Service
This service converts the mount of SIGMA lenses to that of a different camera body, allowing photographers to continue using their favorite lenses over the long term regardless of camera system.

* Only when the camera is compatible.

EF-M Mount Models

  • SIGMA 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary
  • SIGMA 30mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary
  • SIGMA 56mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary

Mount Conversion Service is available to convert other mounts of SIGMA 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary, SIGMA 30mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary and SIGMA 56mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary for Canon EF-M mount. In order to apply for the service, please contact your nearest authorized SIGMA subsidiary or distributor.

From Sigma:

2019.09.11 - SIGMA Corporation (CEO: Kazuto Yamaki) is pleased to announce the launch of a new Art Prime PL mount lens that supports Cooke Optics’ /i Technology communication protocol in a latest addition to the SIGMA CINE LENS family for filmmaking in the FF High Speed Prime Line.

Optimized for large-format camera systems and 8K shooting, the FF High Speed Prime Line lenses deliver stunning image quality in compact construction. A new addition to this prime lens lineup comes with electronic contacts that supports Cooke’s /i Technology communication protocol for Art Prime PL mount lenses.

By using an /i Technology-compatible cine lens with a cine camera that supports the same protocol, users can see and record lens metadata such as focus distance, focal length, and aperture. This helps streamline compositing in the post production process. This is particularly suitable for the latest forms of filmmaking, such as VFX, that call for detailed shooting data.

Prototypes of this /i Technology-compatible FF High Speed Prime lens were used for shooting “Top Gun: Maverick”, scheduled to be released in 2020, showing that the new lens is already in commercial applications.

For SIGMA customers who has already purchased a SIGMA PL mount lens, a new service to turn their lenses /i Technology-compatible is under consideration.

A production version of this new product will be on display at IBC 2019, scheduled to take place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from September 13 to 17, 2019.

Launch: From the end of 2019
Price: TBD
* /i is a registered trademark of Cooke Optics Limited used with permission.

Common specifications

  • PL mount (Cooke /i Technology compatible)
  • Image circle diameter: FF 43.3mm
  • Illumination circle diameter: over 46.3mm
  • Focus ring: Marked in feet / meters
  • Number of diaphragm blades: 9 (circular aperture)
  • Luminous option for focus ring / iris ring markings

Not long ago, the headline above would have seemed ideal for use on April 1st. Today, however, it's real news. [Sean]

From Sigma:

2019.09.11 - The SIGMA Corporation is pleased to announce the launch of “FF Classic Prime Line” as a new series in the SIGMA CINE LENS.

FF High Speed Prime Line has been offering the highest resolving power in its class, that is compatible with 8K shooting with large format sensors, while achieving outstanding compact design. Based on this product line, the FF Classic Prime Line incorporates more non-coated optical elements to achieve unrivaled expression. It retains the high resolution capability that SIGMA CINE LENS is well known for, and offers a unique combination of low contrast and artistic flare/ghost in the image. As with all other lenses from the FF High Speed Prime Line, it creates beautiful bokeh effects to improve creativity.

FF Classic Prime Line has implemented newly developed coatings on the glass elements and offers consistent T value across the lineup (14mm and 135mm at T3.2 and the rest of the lenses at T2.5). This will greatly contribute to the effective workflow in postproduction. Furthermore, it is compatible with the communication protocol of Cooke “/i Technology”, thus an ideal tool for shooting and editing with the latest technology, such as VFX. A special coating is implemented on the front and rear elements so that the lens durability is ensured as with all other cine lenses from SIGMA.

“Classic Art Prime” is a new solution from SIGMA that is required for the most advanced technology for classical expression. The “look” that FF Classic Prime Line can offer will enable cinematographers to explore new possibilities in movie creation.

From September 13th to 17th, SIGMA is going to display this new product at the IBC 2019 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

From Sigma:

The SIGMA Corporation is pleased to release the SIGMA 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN | Art.

Many photographers like to use low sensitivity shooting to minimize noise as much as they can. The 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN | Art has been developed as the ultimate large-diameter, wide-angle zoom lens by optimizing the standard specifications for photographing starry skies for full-frame mirrorless cameras. The uniform rendering performance and outstanding resolution to the edge of the frame make it the “definitive lens for astrophotography.” By utilizing the characteristics of the short flange focal length, this new-generation large-diameter zoom lens combines both compact body and unprecedented high-resolution image quality.

*About Product Name: Product name includes “DG” when the lens is designed to deliver the ultimate in performance on cameras with full-frame sensors, and “DN” when the lens design is optimized for mirrorless cameras with the short flange focal length.

Sigma has announced that its 28mm F1.4 DG HSM in Sony E-mount is scheduled to start shipping later this month.

Note that the biggest downside of the Sigma 28mm Art Lens – AF performance – is avoided when the lens is used on mirrorless cameras (or in Live View on DSLRs), and what you're left with is an extremely high quality lens with excellent image quality.

From Sigma:

Thank you for purchasing and using our products.

We would like to share the results of our further investigations regarding the operating conditions of the Canon "EOS R" and SIGMA’s interchangeable lenses for Canon mount.

When SIGMA’s interchangeable lenses in the current product lineup, listed below, are used in combination with the Canon "EOS R" and their "Mount Adapter EF-EOS R" or "Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R", both AF and AE operate without any issues. Furthermore, lenses which incorporate Optical Stabilizer (OS) will work with the OS function properly in effect.

In addition, when the Digital Lens Optimizer is switched [OFF], but "Peripheral illumination correction", "Chromatic aberration correction" and "Distortion correction", located within the in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function is switched [ON], the appropriate corrections can be achieved in accordance with the optical characteristics of each lens. This is applicable to DG and DC lenses from Contemporary, Art and Sports line listed below which were released after March, 2018, or those of which firmware has been updated to Ver.2.0 or later. For other lenses, the Digital Lens Optimizer as well as the in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function cannot be used. Therefore, please set all to [OFF] before shooting.

Phenomena particular to 3 lenses were confirmed

After careful investigation, we confirmed some phenomena particular to 3 products listed below. Regarding firmware updates for these lenses, we are going to announce them at a later date.

SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Art

  • It may require the battery to be taken out once, if restarting the camera does not work when the lens is taken off the camera while the lens’s OS function is in operation.
  • It may stop the focus driving from infinity to closer focus distance while shooting video with AF.

SIGMA 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports

  • It may require the battery to be taken out once, if restarting the camera does not work when the lens is taken off the camera while the lens’s OS function is in operation.

SIGMA 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Contemporary

  • It may require the battery to be taken out once, if restarting the camera does not work when the lens is taken off the camera while the lens’s OS function is in operation.
  • It may stop the focus driving from infinity to closer focus distance while shooting video with AF.

Other precautions

  • AF can be used within the area of approximately 80% of the height and width of the sensor surface.
  • For interchangeable lenses which are not from Contemporary, Art or Sports line, please focus using MF, since it may be difficult to achieve sufficient focusing speed and accuracy.
  • Tele Converters cannot be used together.
  • Having the focus mode switch set to MF does not let the lens stored automatically when the camera is turned off.
  • Discontinued products have different operating conditions depending on each product and their shipping period. For details, please contact your nearest authorized SIGMA subsidiary / distributor.

From Sigma:

Ronkonkoma, NY – December 7, 2018 – Sigma Corporation of America, a leading still photo and cinema lens, camera, flash and accessory manufacturer, today announced that its anticipated cine lens – Sigma Cine 40mm T1.5 FF – will begin shipping in December 2018 for $3,499.00, with the option to purchase a fully luminous version (FL) for $4,499.00.

Sigma Cine 40mm T1.5 FF is a fast and sharp T1.5 cine lens compatible with full-frame camera sensors and optimized for ultra-high-resolution 6K-8K productions. Featuring a 180-degree focus rotation, this lens is available in EF, E and PL mounts with lens support foot and cap included.

It is the ninth lens in the Sigma Cine FF High Speed Prime Line. As a standard lens in the cinema industry, the focal length of 40mm has become an essential part of a typical cine prime set. By adding this lens to the Sigma Cine offering, its cine prime set can now satisfy all the demands of professional cinematographers.

Sigma Cine 40mm T1.5 FF is the first lens that was designed and developed for the cinema use rather than converting a still photography lens into a cine lens. This development illustrates Sigma’s commitment to the cine market – by always listening to its customers and what their needs are, and now even more than ever with the fully operational Sigma Burbank showcase facility, Sigma strives to develop new products based on that customer feedback.

The Sigma 40mm T1.5 FF lives up to the performance standard required by high-end cinematographers as it achieves the highest optical quality as well as consistent rendering performance over the entire image circle. The lens produces one of the best MTF charts ever, making it an excellent choice for all levels of filmmakers.

Prominent Characteristics of Sigma Cine Lenses

  • Individual inspection of every single lens with A1 proprietary Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) measuring system using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of their quality control inspections.
  • Computer-based ray tracing has been used from the design stage onward to minimize flare and ghosting and enhance contrast in backlit conditions. Ghosting has also been checked at every prototype stage, with its causes identified, assessed and eliminated.
  • Color balance standardized across the line to make color correction a breeze.
  • Dust-proof and splash-proof construction, with each ring and mount sealed to prevent water and dust from entering.
  • The body is made 100% of metal to stand up to tough professional use over the long term.
  • Luminous paint for enhanced visibility
  • Laser engraving for enhanced durability
  • Mount Conversion Service allows users to convert their lenses to and from EF and E-mounts (charges apply). If the camera system changes, it is possible to simply convert the mount system to continue using the high-performance Sigma lenses.
  • The Sigma USB Dock allows the user to connect the lens to a computer and update firmware, while the Sigma Mount Converter MC-11 allows users to enjoy the high performance of Sigma’s Canon EF mount interchangeable lenses with the Sony E-mount camera body.
