October 6, 2014 – Profoto expands its assortment of umbrellas with six new models. The new models are unique on the market in that they are small and lightweight yet deep and parabolic.
Last year, Profoto introduced a new line of umbrellas, comprising twelve models in two shapes (deep and shallow) and three fabrics (white, silver and translucent).
Today, Profoto’s line of umbrellas is extended with six new models. The new models are unique on the market in that they are small and lightweight yet deep and parabolically shaped. This combination of size and shape creates a more focused and directed light than what you might expect from an umbrella of this size.
The smallest new Profoto umbrella is called Profoto Umbrella Deep S. It has a diameter of 85 cm (33 in) and is available in three fabrics (white, silver and translucent). The medium version is called Profoto Umbrella Deep M. It has a diameter of 105 cm (41 in) and is also available in three fabrics (white, silver and translucent).
The deeper and round shape is achieved by using as many as 16 umbrella rods. Like all other Profoto umbrellas, the fabrics have been selected to provide a superior quality of light over years of heavy-duty use, and the metallic elements have been surface treated to prevent rust and discoloration.
The silver versions create a very crisp and direct light with high light output, comparable with that of a hard reflector. The white versions create a softer yet direct light, perfect for portrait and beauty shots. The translucent versions create an even softer light and have a very wide light spread.
Optional diffusers are available for the silver and the white versions. An optional backpanel is available for the translucent version, which practically converts the umbrella into a softbox.

Profoto releases Air Remote TTL-N, a clever little unit that allows Nikon shooters to do TTL metering with the Profoto B1 off-camera flash.
September 15, 2014 - “Game changer.” “Light of my life.” “A little bit of light and magic.” These are just a few of the words that were said when the Profoto B1 off-camera flash was released in November 2013.
The most attention-grabbing feature of the B1 was, and still is, its TTL metering. The TTL feature was initially only available for Canon shooters. But Profoto promised to continue to develop the B1’s patent-pending AirTTL system to also include Nikon. Today, Profoto delivers on that promise by releasing the Air Remote TTL-N.
Air Remote TTL-N is a small, wireless radio transmitter that attaches to the Nikon camera’s hotshoe. Attaching the unit enables TTL metering with the B1. The Air Remote TTL-N can also be used to manually control and sync the B1 or any other Profoto flash with Air built-in.
In other words, Air Remote TTL-N is the Nikon shooter’s equivalent to the Canon shooter’s Air Remote TTL-C (available since November 2013). But note that it is only the Air Remote TTL unit that is different depending on the camera that you are using. The B1 works the same regardless of camera brand. There are two AirTTL remotes, but there is only one B1 off-camera flash.
Air Remote TTL-N is sold separately. The recommended sales price is €295 / $395. The already released Air Remote TTL-C has the same price.
Profoto will continue to develop the AirTTL system and the off-camera flash concept. Next in line is a firmware upgrade for high-speed sync (HSS). New Light Shaping Tools, optimized for on-location photography, are also on their way. Furthermore, Profoto is looking into adding TTL functionality for even more camera manufacturers.

Profoto releases the B1 Location Kit, making the highly portable B1 off- camera flash even easier to bring to an on-location shoot.
May 12, 2014 – Ever since its release in November 2013, the B1 off-camera flash has flown off the shelves as fast as Profoto has been able to deliver it to the stores. The most attention-grabbing features have always been the B1’s TTL metering and its cordless operation. Both of these convey the same message: the B1 is not a studio flash. It is an off-camera flash designed for on-location photography.
With the release of the B1 Location Kit, the B1’s portability is taken to the next level. The kit contains two B1 off-camera flashes, two batteries, a Fast Charger that recharges the battery in one hour, and a Car Charger that plugs into any standard car cigarette connector and recharges the battery in two hours. The gear is packed and delivered in a comfy backpack with room for additional gear not included in the kit, such as stands and lenses.
The B1 Location Kit comes with a streamlined price. Sold at €2950/$3950, the kit offers roughly €250/$200 discount compared to buying the included items separately.

The TTL metering is made possible with Profoto’s patent-pending AirTTL system. Already at launch Profoto promised to continuously update the AirTTL system. One of the most frequently requested features is TTL metering with Canon’s flagship model: the Canon EOS-1D X. Today, this feature is made available free of charge through an easily installed firmware upgrade.
Note that it is not the B1 off-camera flash itself that needs to be upgraded; it is the small radio transmitter that is mounted on the Canon camera’s hot shoe: the Air Remote TTL-C.
The process is very simple:
- Go to www.profoto.com/support.
- Sign in with an existing My Profoto account or create a new one.
- Register your B1 and your Air Remote TTL-C.
- Download the upgrade.
- Open the software and follow the simple instructions.

Jared will take the webinar series in a new problem-solving direction. The series’ title is On Location with Jared Platt. Each episode will start with him presenting a tricky lighting challenge. Then he will present the solution.

Update from Profoto: As some of you might have noted, the firmware upgrade we released on Mar 31 contains a bug that causes the B1 to get stuck at full power. The bug only appears when shooting in TTL mode with Canon EOS-1D X, but considering today's announcement, that is more than enough to remove it from our site.
The short, non-technical explanation for the bug is: we were too eager and didn't test the upgrade properly. For that we are sorry.
Rest assure that we're now working hard to fix this problem. Vacations have been cancelled, the coffee is brewing, and we will get back to you as soon as we can with an update.
For the meantime, it is not possible to download the firmware upgrade from the Profoto site.
Those of you who do not shoot with Canon EOS-1D X will not notice this bug, regardless if you've performed the upgrade or not. Everything will work just fine.

On December 2, 2013, Profoto will introduce twelve new high-quality umbrellas in all shapes and sizes, including a deeper, more parabolic version.
Umbrellas are the backbone of many photographers’ toolboxes, and understandably so. Umbrellas are affordable, easy to work with and very easy to transport. The downside is that many of them are quite fragile and it can be difficult to control their light spread. Swedish lighting manufacturer Profoto aims to solve both of these issues with the new Umbrella Deep and the Umbrella Shallow.
Umbrella Deep is available in two sizes (130cm/51” and 165cm/65”) and in three fabrics: White, Silver and Translucent. All six versions have a deeper, more parabolic shape than the average umbrella. The deeper shape gives the photographer better control of the light spread. It also allows the photographer to focus and shape light by simply sliding the umbrella shaft in its holder.
Umbrella Shallow is also available in two sizes (85cm/33” and 105cm/41”) and in three fabrics: White, Silver and Translucent. The most important difference is that Umbrella Shallow is smaller and less parabolic, making it very lightweight and portable.
Much effort was invested into making both Umbrella Deep and Umbrella Shallow as reliable and sturdy as possible. The fabrics were selected to provide a superior quality of light over years of heavy-duty use, and the metallic elements have been surface treated to prevent rust and discoloration.
The optional Diffusor is also worth mentioning. This is simply pulled over the front of the White or the Silver version to turn it into a large softbox with an even softer and more even light spread.
All umbrellas are delivered in a high-quality bag that protects the umbrella during storage and transport.

Four years ago, Swedish lighting manufacturer Profoto challenged themselves to create the most easy to use yet powerful and versatile off-camera flash ever released. Today, the B1 is set for launch, together with a new TTL remote for Canon E-TTL II cameras.
“The B1 concept was born from a simple idea,” says Göran Marén, Product Manager at Profoto. “We wanted to make it as easy as possible to use an off-camera flash, but we wanted to do so without compromising the quality and versatility that photographers have come to expect from us. All the features of the B1 and the Air Remote TTL can be traced back to this single idea.”
The most notable of these features is the B1’s groundbreaking TTL function. This is a new, patent- pending invention from Profoto that integrates flash and camera. It works like this: you attach the Air Remote TTL unit to your camera’s hot shoe, you point and shoot with your camera, and the B1 automatically adjusts its output to provide you with a perfect exposure. Photographers who prefer adjusting the light themselves can switch to manual control by a simple button-press.
The Air Remote TTL is a small, hot shoe-mounted device that acts like a wireless link between camera and flash, supporting manual and TTL control of B1 lights in up to 3 individual groups. The remote is sold separately, so that photographers may choose the right remote for their camera. The Air Remote TTL-C for Canon cameras with E-TTL II support is launched together with the B1. The Air Remote TTL-N for Nikon cameras with i-TTL support will be available in 2014.
Another interesting feature is the fact that the B1 is completely cordless. Powered by an exchangeable battery and wirelessly synced and controlled with the Air system, it allows the photographer to bring the B1 anywhere and place it without regard to cable length. The battery will provide up to 220 full-power flashes, while the Air system has an operating range up to 300m (1,000ft).
The B1 is notably powerful for its compact size. Packed with 500Ws of light, it is about ten times as powerful as the average speedlight. This is enough to overpower the sun on a sunny day, or to light up larger sets or groups of people. The light output can be controlled in 1/10 f-stop steps over the entire 9 f-stop power range. The B1 is also equipped with a high-efficient LED modeling light, powerful enough to be used as a portable video light.
The speed of B1 is also worth noting, much thanks to the innovative Quick Burst. Quick Burst is a fully automatic feature built-into the B1, allowing the photographer to shoot up to 20 flashes per second at lower power setting. At full power, the B1 will recharge in less than two seconds.
As any other Profoto flash, the B1 is compatible with a wide assortment of Light Shaping Tools. More than 120 tools are available, each with its own distinct effect on light characteristics, distribution and output.
The B1 is officially released today, along with a range of accessories, such as the tailor-made BackPack M, a Quick Charger and a Car Charger.
Distribution has already started and the first products can be expected in stores during December this year.

Speedlights are great for many reasons, but being able to create a soft and shapable light is not one of them. Profoto offers a simple solution to this problem: a speedring that makes the Profoto RFi softboxes compatible with speedlights of most brands.
On November 1, 2012, Profoto released the RFi softboxes – a new line of softboxes comprising 12 sizes and four models. One of the most attention grabbing features of the RFi softbox line is the speedring adaptors that make Profoto’s softboxes compatible with well over 20 different flash brands.
Today, Profoto releases the latest addition to its assortment of speedring adaptors: a new and improved RFi Speedlight Speedring. The name clearly reveals what the tool does; it allows you to use an RFi softbox with speedlights, and thereby soften and shape the light.
But it does not end there. The RFi Speedlight Speedring allows you to mount not one but two speedlights on the bracket. This means that you now have enough power and punch to shoot in bright sunlight or light up an even larger softbox, such as the Softbox RFi 3x4’.
Each speedlight can slide and be tilted inside the softbox, allowing you to create a remarkably even light with no hotspot. The entire softbox can also be tilted, rotated 360° and adjusted high wise. In short, the RFi Speedlight Speedring allows you to shape the light however you see fit.

CONNECT TWO HEADS TO YOUR ACUTEB2 WITH THE ACUTEB TWO-HEAD SPLIT CABLE!
The new AcuteB Two-head Split Cable from Profoto is a cord with one plug in one end and two in the other. Connect it to the output on your AcuteB2 and you have two outputs at your disposal. Very simple, yet very effective.
The AcuteB2 600 AirS is Profoto’s most compact and lightweight battery generator. This makes it perfect for on-location shoots and situations where you need to stay moving. It has only one output, but with the Split Cable that is not an issue.
Connect the Split Cable to the output of the AcuteB2 and suddenly you have two outputs. In other words, you can now work with two light sources – and this without having to bring another generator with you. So, it is either half the baggage or twice the possibilities, depending on what you are used to.

1. New safety lamp head connector
The new safety lamp head connector is the most visible upgrade. The safety lamp head connector helps prevent dust and moisture from penetrating the generator. Note that the safety lamp head connector is 100% backward compatible.
2. New improved stand adapter
The stand adaptor has been upgraded with a fixed screw. Unlike the previous version, it cannot be unintentionally screwed off. In addition, the stand adaptor is now equipped with an additional hole, which creates improved mounting options.
3. New patent pending “Perfect Arc” flashtube

Latest continuous light sources add to the growing Profoto product line

Profoto Introduces New ProDaylight 200/400 Air
Latest continuous light sources add to the growing Profoto product line
North White Plains, NY (April 16, 2012) – Profoto, the world's leading manufacturer of professional photography lighting and Light Shaping Tools, announces today the new ProDaylight 200 Air and ProDaylight 400 Air continuous light sources. In 2011, Profoto released the continuous light source ProDaylight 800 Air, thereby introducing the concept of light shaping to video. ProDaylight Air is an HMI light, which is ideal for most photo and video shoots.
These latest versions are even smaller and more lightweight, yet still as powerful and robust. The fact that the units do not use fans to keep cool makes them totally silent – a valuable feature when working with live sound video. The word “Air” simply means that they come with Profoto’s renowned Air radio remote function, which lets users control the light from the palm of their hand.

Profoto Introduces New Umbrella XL Product Line
ew Light Shaping Tools ideal for portrait and fashion photography
Elmsford, NY (December 1, 2011) – Profoto, the world's leading manufacturer of professional photography lighting and Light Shaping Tools, is proud to introduce the new Umbrella XL product line.
"The new Profoto Umbrella XL products were created with professional portrait and fashion photographers in mind," said Mark Rezzonico, VP Product Group. "These new light shaping tools create a smooth yet distinctive light, allowing photographers to perfectly illuminate a single person or even small groups with just a single light source."
Available in three versions – white, silver and translucent – the new Profoto Umbrella XL features a diameter of 65” with a slightly parabolic shape that allows photographers to change the light distribution by simply sliding the umbrella shaft inside the flash head. In addition, the light spread can also be adjusted by moving the Zoom Reflector back or forth, creating an even more versatile look.
The Profoto Umbrella XL fits on all Profoto flash heads and monolights. It can also be mounted on Profoto’s Cine Reflector, and thereby can be used with the new line of continuous light sources – ProDaylight 800 Air and ProTungsten 1000 Air.
There is also an optional front diffuser available to soften the light and reduce the intensity by 1.5 f/stops, practically converting the white and silver models into a fully functioning Octabox. An optional stand adapter allows photographers to mount the umbrella on a light stand, or for use with other flash brands.

All three versions come in a rugged transport bag. They are available now at local photo retailers throughout the U.S. starting at around $300.
