The word on the street is that you simply cannot make sharp images with teleconverters (TCs) especially with the 2X. Nothing could be further from the truth. With some practice and good sharpness techniques you can learn to use TCs effectively to photograph small, distant, or shy subjects.
Teleconverters or multipliers come in a variety of strengths, most usually 1.4X and 2X. Nikon also offers a 1.7X TCE. Each will multiply your effective focal length by the factor in its name. A 1.4X TC will make your 400mm lens into a 560mm lens. A doubler, aka a 2X TC, will enable your 600mm lens to give you 1200mm of reach.
In this program, Arthur Morris, internationally noted bird photographer and educator, will share the tips and secrets that he has developed and used for more than three decades so that you too can use TCs to improve your photography. This program will be well-illustrated with Artie’s spectacular images of birds, wildlife, flowers, and even a few unexpected subjects.

Adding flash gives you endless creative possibilities no matter where you go or what time of day or night. This lecture will first show you how to use as little as one off-camera Speedlite to control and create stand out photos. While some of these tips may seem a little obvious, they're all worth considering if interested in investing in a gimbal stabilizer system. Note that the video author's tip for using a quick release doesn't mention that a completely enclosed QR system – like the Manfrotto RC2 – would be best to ensure quick setup/breakdown without the need for rebalancing. With an Arca-style QR system, it's difficult to get the plate identically positioned when mounting. And when it comes to stabilizers, "close" won't usually cut it. [Sean]

Speaking as a guy who loves capturing outdoor portraits with strobes while underexposing the ambient, I thought this was a fairly neat trick. That said, setting up an 8x8 diffusion frame, hanging the net and then sandbagging the whole thing means that Joel Grimes (and crew) probably spent just as much time (or more) setting up this scrim as I would setting up a strobe, power pack and light modifier. Also, this doesn't look to be a very flexible option as moving the setup would take a lot of time and work.
That said, a diffusion panel and net would be a more reliable solution as there aren't any electronic components to fail and battery power is not required. And compared to a high-power monolight solution, the scrim is probably a less expensive option. [Sean]
