From Nikon USA:

Market Bolstered by Exceptional Demand for the Award-Winning Full Frame (FX-format) D850 DSLR

MELVILLE, NY – Imaging leader Nikon attained the #1 position for both market share and revenue for December 2017, in the full frame digital camera with interchangeable lens (DCIL) category in the U.S.1 The overwhelming success of the powerful new Nikon D850 DSLR as well as the acclaimed D750 DSLR helped contribute to the brand’s strong growth within the full frame camera segment for December 2017. According to The NPD Group, Nikon achieved double-digit unit and dollar sales growth within the full frame camera segment in December 2017 vs. December 2016.2

This market category comprises all full frame digital cameras with interchangeable lenses (DCIL), including DSLR and mirrorless cameras. December is a significant month for sales because of the large volume of units sold during the holidays; industry-wide, DCIL full frame unit sales for the month of December 2017 were almost equal to unit sales from January through March of 2017, according to The NPD Group.3

“Nikon has returned to an emphasis on high-end products for advanced and professional users. These users appreciate Nikon’s full frame offerings because of their amazing image quality, reliability, low-light capability and high-speed performance,” said Bo Kajiwara, President and CEO, Nikon Inc. “Nikon is an innovative, diversified company with a clear, long-term strategy to thrive into 2018 and beyond.”

Since the beginning of 2017, the camera industry has seen strong growth in the full frame segment, with consumers gravitating toward Nikon’s innovative offerings for advanced and professional photographers. The month of December alone saw an overall increase of 69% in units and 59% in dollars compared to the same period in 2016.2 Nikon specifically experienced an 81% increase in units, and 88% growth in dollars for this segment.2

For the month of December, the top two selling DSLR cameras in this segment were the Nikon D750 and the Nikon D850.4 There has been exceptional demand for the extremely versatile, highly acclaimed D850, which is the ultimate combination of speed and resolution. This 45.7-megapixel full frame DSLR is a tool for serious photographers with robust construction, unparalleled imaged quality and proven reliability. Both the D850 and the D750 have won a myriad of industry and consumer accolades, and both are perfectly complemented by the vast NIKKOR lens system, which offers the best in optical excellence.

“Premium segments are leading the imaging market, as consumer demand for features like full frame are on the rise,” said Ben Arnold, executive director, industry analyst for The NPD Group.

Kajiwara also added, “We want to sincerely thank our customers and our fans for making this achievement possible.”

Nikon has focused on making its products better able to respond more completely to the demands made by photographers, their work and the environments that challenge them. Reasons the D5 was selected: A selection of comments from users

  • The D5 exhibits the absolute performance and presence of a flagship model. I am especially impressed with its unparalleled performance at high sensitivities, which greatly expands the possibilities for imaging expression.
  • I really like the fact that it is a still camera that offers a level of advancement never before seen with all major functions, including AF, AE, and high-sensitivity characteristics, and that it clearly expresses the direction cameras and technology will take in the future.
  • With features such as support for standard sensitivities as high as ISO 102400, advanced AF, and a touch screen monitor, this model seems indicative of what we can expect of flagship models in the future. In addition, the availability of two versions of the camera, one supporting XQD cards and one CompactFlash cards, clearly shows that Nikon took both existing and new users into consideration with development.
  • The excellence of this camera is something of which Japan can be extremely proud.

D5 primary features

  • A new-generation, 153-point AF system capable of capturing the intended subject under a wide variety of conditions
  • High-speed continuous shooting at up to approximately 12 fps with a viewfinder display that keeps the view through the lens incredibly stable for clear visibility
  • Consistently superior image quality, even with shooting at high sensitivities
  • Equipped with a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) movie recording function that videographers will find very useful
  • Functions and performance that respond to a variety of on-site demands and achieve a fast workflow

From Nikon:

TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that three of its products are recipients of the prestigious TIPA Awards 2016 sponsored by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), a global authority in the photography and imaging industry. The Nikon D5 digital SLR camera has been selected for the Best DSLR Professional/Action awards, the Nikon D500 for the Best APS-C DSLR Expert award, and the SnapBridge app for the Best Imaging Innovation award.

The best photographic and imaging products released between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016 in a number of categories were selected for the TIPA Awards 2016 through voting by editors of prestigious camera and imaging magazines from around the world.

Reasons the Nikon D5 was selected for the Best DSLR Professional/Action awards (summary of TIPA comments)
The EXPEED 5 image-processing engine built into the D5 delivers low noise, the high-speed processing required for 4K UHD video, and high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 12 fps (with AF and AE tracking). Up to 200 14-bit lossless-compression RAW images can be captured with a single burst of continuous shooting. The new Multi-CAM 20K autofocus sensor module is very densely packed with 153 focus points (99 are cross-type sensors positioned in central and peripheral areas) covering a broad area of the frame. What's more, still JPEG images with a pixel count of roughly 8 megapixels can be extracted from 4K UHD movies, the D5 supports the highest standard sensitivity in Nikon history — ISO 102400, and with an AF detection range beginning at just -4 EV, autofocusing on dimly lit and low-contrast subjects is possible.

Reasons the Nikon D500 was selected for the Best APS-C DSLR Expert award (summary of TIPA comments)
Adoption of the new EXPEED 5 image-processing engine and a new Nikon DX-format CMOS sensor for the D500 has achieved a broad standard sensitivity range — ISO 100–51200, expandable to the equivalent of ISO 1640000 (Hi 5). The D500 delivers high-speed continuous shooting at up to approximately 10 fps (with AF and AE tracking) for up to 79 shots of 14-bit uncompressed RAW images in a single burst. Along with stills, the D500 supports recording of 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)/30p, full-HD, and time-lapse movies. It is equipped with a 3.2-inch, approximately 2,360K-dot touch screen monitor for viewing and shooting ease. The camera can record to both XQD and SD card slots at the same time, and is compatible with SnapBridge for seamless connection of the camera to a smart device, allowing users to transfer and share images.

Reasons SnapBridge was selected for the Best Imaging Innovation award (summary of TIPA comments)
SnapBridge enables seamless connection of a camera and smart device with an energy-efficient Bluetooth low energy connection. Once installed, SnapBridge enables immediate transfer of images to a smart device from the camera with which up to five smart devices can be paired. Original JPEG images, or smaller 2-MP (full HD) JPEG copies can be automatically transferred to, and stored on, smart devices during shooting. In addition, two types of embedded information, including copyright, shooting information, comments, and logos, can be included. Further, the app supports remote shooting from the smart device, allowing users to frame and preview shots in real time using the smart device screen and, with certain cameras, to operate features such as the self-timer.

B&H has the Nikon D500 and the Nikon D5 (XQD) available for preorder, while the Nikon D5 (CF) is in stock with free expedited shipping.

New York Tops the List with Most Number of Photographs Submitted

November 12, 2015 – MELVILLE, NY – Nikon has announced New York state as this year’s top spot for fall foliage photography. The results come after a national crowdsourced campaign on Nikon’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter channels, where community members submitted their photos showing off their state’s best spots to photograph the dramatic yearly experience.

From the golden aspens of the West to the blazing orange maples of the East, Nikon received more than 2,000 submissions from participants across the country. The result is a curated collection of some of the most stunning American foliage landscapes, featuring dramatic valleys in the rolling morning mist, epic winding roads and hidden waterfalls.

“Across the country, this is an exciting time of year as many people head outdoors to experience fall foliage and its incredible colors,” said Lisa Baxt, Associate General Manager of Communications, Nikon Inc. “Nikon was thrilled to be the catalyst that encouraged people to capture and share beautiful images of their autumn experiences.”

New York State (#NikonFallNY) secured the top spot this year with the most amount of photographs submitted. Through Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, New Yorkers shared photos showing off the state’s gorgeous foliage and vast landscapes. Notable stunning submissions came from the Adirondack region, the Hudson Valley and the Letchworth State Park area of western New York.

Both Pennsylvania (#NikonFallPA) and North Carolina (#NikonFallNC) trailed closely for the top spot this year. Pennsylvania’s vast forests and beautiful valleys were the subject of many great foliage photos, particularly from Northeastern PA and the Pocono Region. Breaking out of the northeast, North Carolina ranked in the top three states with an impressive number of submissions. Beautiful images of both the natural features and winding portions of North Carolina’s gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway were popular subjects from community members.

For a view of all of the submissions on Instagram and Twitter, search the hashtag #NikonFall, followed by the state’s abbreviation. On Facebook, visit www.facebook.com/NIkonUSA to view the submissions.

The 2015-2016 Schedule Includes New Portrait & Lighting Workshop and Other Popular Courses, Offers Educational Opportunities for Those Who Want to Take Their Photos to the Next Level

MELVILLE, NY (September 15, 2015) - Today, Nikon Inc. has announced the 2015-2016 Nikon School class schedule, featuring exciting interactive programs for every level of photographer. This year, Nikon School is returning to some of the top cities nationwide to help educate and inspire photo enthusiasts to embrace their passions and tell their stories visually.

Nikon School will host more than 50 classes from October 2015 to June 2016 in 13 locations across the country, and kicks off in Boston on October 17 with the DSLR Video 2-Day Workshop. The classes, offered in full or half-day sessions, cover a wide range of photography disciplines for photographers of all levels. Classes range from instruction on the basic elements of photography to intricacies of lighting, improving portraits or getting the most out of DSLR video. The programs are taught by industry experts, including Reed Hoffmann, Carey Wagner, Michael Schwarz, Nick Didlick, Bob Pearson and Nikon Ambassador Tamara Lackey.

“The classes offered by Nikon School are uniquely designed to teach new skills and offer creative direction as well as engage participants to challenge themselves,” said Mark Suban, Senior Manager, Nikon Professional Services at Nikon Inc. “The Nikon School courses will provide advice and insights to help those that want to share their passions and interests through photography and better tell their stories visually.”

A new addition to this year’s schedule is the Portrait & Lighting Workshop, a one-day course that combines classroom instruction with hands-on shooting. This advanced workshop will help photographers learn the importance of light and how to modify it to create a great image. Nikon School will also offer popular classes like Basics of Exposure and Camera Controls, a course for those either new to the world of photography or ready to step up from a point-and-shoot camera or smartphone device. This class will teach beginners how to properly frame a shot and use the various menus and controls at their disposal. On the other end of the spectrum, for more advanced photographers looking to explore the world of videography, the 2-Day DSLR Video Workshop will provide guidance for real-world shooting techniques. This class will include lighting tips, selecting proper equipment and the best ways to incorporate audio.

Nikon’s AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR Lens and the SB-500 AF Speedlight Win in Their Respective Categories

MELVILLE, NY – Professional Photographer Magazine has selected the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens and SB-500 Speedlight as the pros’ top choice in the Multi-Functions Lens and Speedlight/Hot Shoe Flash categories, respectively for the 2015 Hot One Awards.

The annual Hot One Awards honor the hottest products for professional photographers. From hundreds of entries, a panel of judges—who are all professional photographers—name their top choice among dozens of photography products and services. The awards are highlighted in the August issue of Professional Photographer.

This year, judges for the 16th annual Hot One Awards chose the compact and lightweight AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens as the top Multi-Purpose Lens. The judges also chose the versatile SB-500 AF Speedlight as the top Speedlight/Hot Shoe Flash in the industry.

“Nikon seeks to give professional photographers the best equipment for the job, and it is an honor to be recognized once again by Professional Photographer Magazine with these awards,” said Masahiro Horie, Director of Marketing and Planning.

“The winners of the 2015 Hot One Awards represent the pros’ choice of the year’s photographic products,” says Professional Photographer Senior Editor Joan Sherwood. “The Hot Ones recognize excellence in professional products as judged by the pros who use them. As talented as photographers can be, they still have to rely on their gear, software, professional services, and the products they sell. Their choices for the Hot Ones give our readers a list of worthy winners to consider for themselves.”

The Hot One Awards have provided Professional Photographer readers with a resource of the newest, most innovative products available in a variety of price ranges. Readers are treated to a resource compiled by independent, practicing professional photographers, selected for their expertise and knowledge. This year’s independent panel of 35 judges voted on products that ranged from cameras and lenses to albums and displays. They made their selections based on overall quality, innovation, design, performance, and value for the price.

For more than 100 years, Professional Photographer, the official magazine of Professional Photographers of America, has helped readers advance careers in the photographic industry. No other magazine offers a more influential presentation of the people, trends, products, and photographs defining the portrait, wedding, and commercial photography landscapes.
