From Nikon:
MELVILLE, NY – Nikon Inc. is pleased to announce the release of the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, a fixed focal length super-telephoto lens compatible with Nikon FX-format digital SLR cameras.
The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is a high-performance, FX-format, super-telephoto lens that supports 500 mm focal length. The adoption of a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element has significantly reduced the size and weight of the lens, making hand-held super-telephoto photography easier and more enjoyable.
With a maximum diameter of 106 mm and length of 237 mm, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, which weighs 1,460g (roughly the same weight as the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR) is significantly lighter than previous 500mm lenses which can typically weigh up to more than 3,000g. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is designed with consideration to dust- and drip- resistance, which in addition to the fluorine coat applied to the front lens surface, allows greater agility when shooting.
The use of one PF lens element and three ED glass elements enables extremely sharp and detailed rendering that is compatible with high pixel-count digital cameras. In addition, the materials used in the new PF lens element have been developed effectively to reduce PF (diffraction) flare, allowing light sources to be reproduced in near-original colors. In combination with Nikon's coating technologies, such as the Nano Crystal Coat, effective in controlling ghost and flare, extremely clear images are achieved.
AF speed has been increased by making lens elements in the focusing group lighter. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is equipped with a VR mechanism that offers camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.01-stop increase in shutter speed. The SPORT VR mode that has been adopted is especially effective when photographing fast-moving and unpredictable subjects such as wild birds, or in scenes such as sporting events. The stabilization of the image displayed in the viewfinder is also an effective feature for recording movies.
Additionally, the use of the Mount Adapter FTZ will allow the lens to be used with mirrorless cameras Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6, also announced today. Users will be able to enjoy super-telephoto shooting at the 500 mm focal length with a system that is even more compact than ever before.
We are also planning to release the Dot Sight DF-M1, an accessory that is highly effective with super-telephoto photography. With super-telephoto shooting, a narrow field of view in the viewfinder tends to be made visible – making it easy to lose track of the subject. The Dot Sight DF-M1 makes it easy to keep track of the intended subject within the frame, even if the subject exhibits sudden movement.
PF (Phase Fresnel) Lens Elements
The PF (Phase Fresnel) lens, developed by Nikon, effectively compensates chromatic aberration, utilizing the photo diffraction phenomenon2. It provides superior chromatic aberration compensation performance when combined with a normal glass lens. Compared to many general camera lenses that employ an optical system using the photorefractive phenomenon, a remarkably compact and lightweight body can be attained with fewer lens elements.

Offers superior agility and optical performance
June 14, 2018 – TOKYO – Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the development of the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, a fixed focal length super-telephoto lens compatible with Nikon FX-format digital SLR cameras.
The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR will be a high-performance super-telephoto lens that is significantly smaller and lighter than comparable predecessors due to the adoption of the same type of Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element used in the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR, released in January 2015. This lens makes hand-held photography easy, despite it being a fixed focal length super-telephoto lens that supports 500 mm focal length. The portability of the lens allows it to be used in a wider variety of situations, and for capturing fast-moving and unpredictable subjects in scenes such as sporting events.
Details, including the release date and suggested retail price for this product, will be shared at a later date.
Nikon continues to encourage the pursuit of imaging expression possibilities through its innovative products and solutions, built on its 100 years of heritage and advanced technical capabilities.
PF (Phase Fresnel) Lens Elements
The PF (Phase Fresnel) lens, developed by Nikon, effectively compensates chromatic aberration utilizing the photo diffraction phenomenon*. It provides superior chromatic aberration compensation performance when combined with a normal glass lens. Compared to many general camera lenses that employ an optical system using the photorefractive phenomenon, a remarkably compact and lightweight body can be attained with less number of lens elements.
* Diffraction phenomenon: Light has characteristics as a waveform. When a waveform faces an obstacle, it attempts to go around and behind it, and this characteristic is referred to as diffraction. Diffraction causes chromatic dispersion in the reverse order of refraction.

January 8, 2018 – LAS VEGAS – Today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Nikon Inc. announced the new AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR super-telephoto zoom lens, which is ideally suited for photographing sports and wildlife with astounding speed and clarity. This professional level FX-format lens is more versatile than ever, and has been updated with the newest NIKKOR lens technologies including Nikon’s first ever built-in teleconverter and an advanced optical formula to enhance performance and minimize weight.
“This lens is a great example of how Nikon continues to push the boundaries of innovation and what’s possible with pro-level optics and high-end imaging equipment,” said Kosuke Kawaura, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc.
Popular Pro-Level Lens Gets Even More Versatile
This new NIKKOR lens is a professional super-telephoto zoom lens, which is even more versatile with an extended wide range of 180-400mm, and a constant f/4 aperture to easily isolate a subject from the sidelines, even in challenging light. This is also the first NIKKOR lens to include a built-in 1.4X teleconverter, allowing photographers to seamlessly swap to a 252-560mm1 (FX-format) focal range. The teleconverter is engaged at the flick of a switch, and is easily operated with a single finger while looking through the viewfinder. When used on the Nikon D500 and other DX-format DSLRs, the focal length is the equivalent of 270-600mm (378-840mm with teleconverter engaged).
Whether capturing fast-moving winter sports on the slopes or elusive wildlife at a distance, photographers can shoot with confidence from this high performance NIKKOR lens. The new 180-400mm f/4 is optimized for high-speed capture, and features an electromagnetic diaphragm, helping to create smooth and consistent exposures while shooting high-speed bursts of images. What’s more, the AF tracking algorithm controlling the motor drive has been enhanced to increase tracking performance of fast moving subjects. When using cameras equipped with Nikon’s advanced 153-point AF system (D5, D500, D850), the outer row of AF points are activated as cross-type sensors to significantly enhance the AF coverage throughout the frame.2
Enhanced Performance with the Addition of New Technology
The lens now uses a fluorite element, which contributes to improved balance while minimizing weight. To further enhance handling and agility, the lens has adopted a new ball-bearing tripod collar ring to create a seamless transition from shooting horizontal to vertical composition. The VR mechanism offers a normal and sports mode, with up to four stops3 of compensation to help create sharp images, even when handheld.
The lens construction includes the use of durable magnesium alloy for weight reduction, while the lens is also sealed against dust and moisture. A fluorine coating is also used to help repel water droplets and dirt.
The optical formula of the lens uses eight Extra Low Dispersion (ED) elements, doubling the amount of ED elements used by its predecessor, the NIKKOR 200-400mm. These help to provide extremely sharp and detailed images and 4K UHD / 1080p video, and is ideally mated to high resolution Nikon DSLR cameras. Nikon’s exclusive Nano Crystal Coat is used to effectively suppress instances of ghosting and flare.
Price and Availability
The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lens will be available in March 2018 for a suggested retail price of $12,399.954.

AF-S Fisheye NIKKOR 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5E ED – Circular Fisheye for Photographers and Content Creators
Nikon’s first fisheye zoom gives photographers and filmmakers an FX-format lens with the look and feel of a circular fisheye and the versatility of a full-frame fisheye, all in one lens. The new lens design provides a creative circular 180-degree vertical / horizontal angle of view on full frame cameras, and zooms to a non-circular fisheye view (180-degree diagonal angle of view) on the long end of the focal range. The lens can also be used on DX-format cameras for a distinctive point-of-view and extreme wide-angle applications. When looking to push creative boundaries, the intriguing perspective from a fisheye lens should be considered to provide a distinct look to your photos and videos, such as a dramatic emphasis on a subject or an extremely wide interior point of view.
The AF-S Fisheye NIKKOR 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5E ED is also the latest in Nikon’s Gold Ring Series of premier lenses and features a next-generation design for high-resolution Nikon DSLR cameras. It is also Nikon’s latest lens to use an electromagnetic diaphragm for consistent exposure during high speed shooting, or smooth exposure control while capturing video.
The optical formula of the Fisheye NIKKOR 8-15mm consists of three ED elements to reduce chromatic aberration, while two aspherical lens elements minimize coma, even at the widest aperture, and enable a more compact lens size. Additionally, the front lens element is coated with Nikon's non-stick Fluorine coat to help resist dirt, fingerprints and smudges, while Nikon’s exclusive Nano Crystal Coat helps reduce ghost and flare.
AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED – The Latest in The Gold Ring Series of f/1.4 Primes in the NIKKOR Line
The new AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED is Gold Ring glass that provides maximum versatility for outstanding definition and sharpness regardless of shooting scenario. For storytellers who yearn to capture optically-challenging subjects like cityscapes and architecture, interiors or unique landscapes, this lens offers 97° of coverage - the widest focal length of any PC lens in the NIKKOR family. Tilt the lens to sharpen focus throughout a scene or create a miniature effect, or shift2 to adjust perspective in-camera, create panoramas or eliminate converging lines. For the first time with a NIKKOR PC lens, the direction of tilt operation can be made parallel or perpendicular to shift, offering users nearly unprecedented ability to control perspective, focus and depth-of-field, without having to lock and unlock to make adjustments.
Sporting a super-wide 19mm focal length, the lens provides a unique perspective ideal for shooting horizontal or vertical panoramas, or even filmmaking. With this ultra-wide angle in mind, the latest FX-format NIKKOR offering was crafted with three ED and two aspherical elements that help combat distortion and glare, while virtually eliminating chromatic aberration and coma, even at the widest aperture settings. Fast, prime mid-telephoto lens delivering the large, smooth and beautiful bokeh and edge-to-edge rendering
TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED, a fast, mid-telephoto fixed focal length (prime) lens that is compatible with Nikon FX-format digital SLR cameras.
The AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED is a fast, mid-telephoto fixed focal length (prime) lens with which a focal length of 105mm, a maximum aperture of f/1.4, and AF capabilities have been achieved. The 105mm and f/1.4 specifications achieve a shallow depth of field and large bokeh, enabling photographic expression that makes the most of the impressive cropping of a scene and optimal compression effects.
This lens was developed based on the design concept that is, "three-dimensional high fidelity". Thus, it is capable of more natural 3D reproduction of three-dimensional subjects on the two-dimensional fields that are photos, as well as large and beautiful bokeh characteristics, that provide smooth alteration of bokeh as the distance from the focus position increases. These characteristics enable rendering with a natural sense of depth in portraits and images of still objects.
On the other hand, landscapes are reproduced with superior resolution all the way to the edges of the frame, even at maximum aperture, for extremely sharp and clear rendering. Superior point image reproduction capabilities ensure rendering of points and sharp points for very little distortion or bleed with the pinpoint light sources in night landscapes. Night landscapes are sharply reproduced.
In addition, three ED lens elements that provide compensation for chromatic aberration have been adopted, Nano Crystal Coat is utilized for effective reduction of ghost and flare, the lens is equipped with an electromagnetic aperture mechanism that enables stable exposure control, even with high-speed continuous shooting, and highly durable fluorine coat, which effectively repels dust, water, grease, and dirt, has been adopted.
The bright viewfinder image of this fast fixed focal length (prime) lens is advantageous not only because it reduces stress for more comfortable shooting, but also it enables hand-held capture of dimly lit scenes.
The AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED, which embodies the "three-dimensional high fidelity" concept, responds to the demands of professional and advanced amateur photographers pursuing their own imaging intent with a variety of photographic scenes. It is capable not only of impressive portraits and photos of still subjects that beautifully utilize the large and smooth bokeh characteristics, but also daytime, evening, and night landscapes that exhibit superior resolution all the way to the edges of the frame, and excellent reproduction of point images.

TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that total production of NIKKOR lenses for Nikon interchangeable lens cameras reached one-hundred million* in June of 2016.
NIKKOR's history began in 1932 with Nikon's (then Nippon Kogaku K.K.) registration of the NIKKOR trademark, soon followed in 1933 with the release of Aero-Nikkor aerial photographic lenses. In 1959, Nikon released the Nikon F SLR camera as well as its first NIKKOR lenses for Nikon SLR cameras including the NIKKOR-S Auto 5cm f/2.
The NIKKOR brand
NIKKOR is Nikon's brand of photographic lenses. The NIKKOR name arose from adding "r"—a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time the name was established—to "Nikko", the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K., the original name used when the company was established.

Nikon F mount, running parallel to NIKKOR lenses for more than 50 years
The mount used by Nikon for its SLR cameras and interchangeable lenses in the more than half a century that has passed since Nikon released its first SLR camera in 1959, the Nikon F, has been the Nikon F mount. Since the introduction of the Nikon F mount in 1950, a bayonet mount has been adopted, stainless steel, known for its superior durability and corrosion resistance has been used, and the mount's basic design foresaw the increase in lens diameters. Throughout its history, the cutting-edge technologies of the time, including aperture control and autofocus, have been adopted for the F mount, and we will continue to do so, ensuring support for the latest digital cameras and lenses.
OPTIA
While developing the latest optical technologies and commercialization of products utilizing these technologies, Nikon continues its work in the research and development of means of evaluating optical performance. In 2013, Nikon began development and deployment of OPTIA, a device for measuring all forms of aberration occurring with photographic lenses that was originally developed as a means of measuring aberration in IC steppers and scanners, as well as a dedicated image simulator that is used with OPTIA. OPTIA and the dedicated image simulator are still used to evaluate and verify NIKKOR lens characteristics today.
In addition to resolution, camera lens performance is indicated by such characteristics as blur (as known as "bokeh"), reproduction of textures, and sense of depth. The application of OPTIA's aberration measurement to Nikon lenses has always had a very high reputation.
The image simulator (software) developed alongside OPTIA enables simulation at the design stage that is equivalent to actual photography with lens prototypes. Consequently lenses can be developed with greater control over not only resolution, but also a wide variety of lens characteristics.
Adoption of the new design concept formulated with the use of OPTIA and the image simulator will enable more effective development of high-performance lenses with unique characteristics, and allow Nikon to provide customers with interchangeable lenses that offer new forms of value never before seen.
One of the lenses designed using OPTIA is the AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED, released today. This lens embodies the "three-dimensional high-fidelity (superior reproduction characteristics)" design concept that represents Nikon's ideal with more natural three-dimensional reproduction of three-dimensional objects on the two-dimensional field known as a photograph. It enables photos with a natural sense of depth and in which the primary subject is impressively rendered, while expressing beautiful bokeh characteristics that change gradually as the distance from the focus position increases.
Nikon will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2017. Nikon will continue to develop high-quality, appealing products that exceed expectations with more advanced technologies and even stricter quality control, and to offer the services our users need.

From Nikon:
New DL range raises the standard of compact camera photography with DSLR- inspired optical innovation of high-performance NIKKOR lenses and always-on smart device connectivity
February 23, 2016 - TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the Nikon DL series, a new line-up of premium compact cameras incorporating high-performance NIKKOR lenses, SnapBridge connectivity and a suite of digital SLR camera functions to complement any advanced enthusiast or professional's kit.
Inspired by the Nikon professional photographer community, the "D" in the Nikon DL series, draws on Nikon's DSLR heritage, while "L" calls out the premium NIKKOR lens technology which serves as the focal point for the range. The series comprises three new models, the DL18-50 f/1.8-2.8, DL24-85 f/1.8-2.8, and the DL24-500 f/2.8-5.6, each equipped with different NIKKOR lens groups and crafted for different photography styles. The first is a 18-50 mm equivalent ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that boasts the fastest and brightest maximum aperture in NIKKOR history, the second a fast, 24-85 mm equivalent normal zoom lens offering beautiful blur (bokeh), and super macro performance, while the last is an ultra high-power zoom lens that exhibits superior resolution over a broad range of focal lengths, up to an super-telephoto 500 mm equivalent.
Each model adopts a 1.0-inch type backside illumination CMOS sensor and the new EXPEED 6A image-processing engine for enabling the expression capabilities demanded by users of digital SLR cameras, while also providing sharp and clear rendering when shooting in dark surroundings.
For the accurate and precise acquisition of photography subjects, the Nikon DL series features a hybrid AF system combining both phase-detection AF and Contrast-detect AF. The focus points are densely packed to ensure wide AF area coverage for reliable performance in unpredictable shooting environments, keeping up with the DL range's high autofocusing speed of approximately 0.09 s. This works in tandem with an outstanding continuous shooting speed of 20 frames per second.
Completing the seamless transition when switching between shooting with a DSLR and their DL camera, photographers using the DL series will also find themselves returning to a system that is both familiar and intuitive, with the cameras' adoption of the Nikon DSLR user interface. The DL series also aid photographers looking beyond still image capture, with video recording in 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)/30p quality, alongside a suite of creative movie-making options.
The cameras also support Nikon's newest connectivity platform, SnapBridge, for the seamless and immediate transfer of images to paired smart devices.
