Adobe recently released Lightroom Downloader, a Windows 10 & macOS v10.13 application that allows you to download all synced Lightroom photos to a folder on your hard drive.

Notes (from Adobe):

  • The app downloads all your Lightroom photos and videos from the cloud as original files and writes them into a date-based folder hierarchy at the hard-drive location that you specify.
  • The edits made to the raw images are written into the XMP sidecar files that accompany the downloaded raw files.
  • For the photos originally uploaded from the Lightroom Classic CC desktop app that only have a Smart Preview synced to the cloud, the app downloads DNG Smart Previews only for such photos.

From Adobe:

The goal of this release is to provide perpetual customers additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom.

A few clarifications for this release:

Do I need upgrade to Lightroom 6.13 when Lightroom Classic CC has already launched?

You should only update to Lightroom 6.13 if you are currently holding a license to our perpetual, non-subscription-based product.

Is this the last upgrade of Lightroom perpetual product?

As we align our investments in the direction of supporting our subscription-based products, the last version of Lightroom 6 will be coming out towards the end of the year. If there is a camera not supported in Lightroom 6, you can use the DNG converter before importing your images into Lightroom 6.

As a perpetual license customer, can I try out Lightroom Classic in tandem with Lightroom 6 to see if I am interested in upgrading?

Yes. We highly encourage you to try out Lightroom Classic to get the additional performance benefits and feature enhancements launched recently and to come. If you are interested in trying out Lightroom Classic, while still keeping a version of Lightroom 6 in tandem on your desktop, check out Lightroom Classic CC 7.0.1.

From the Adobe Lightroom Journal (authored by Priya Alexander):

We understand we sent perpetual customers down a path of subscribing to a trial version of the new Lightroom Classic CC last week, replacing already installed versions of Lightroom 6.

The good news is we fixed this issue and wanted to get a quick release out to immediately address your concerns. Now once you click on the “Update” button next to Lightroom Classic CC, you will see under the Advanced Options, the “Remove old versions” is unchecked by default. As a result, you can try out Lightroom Classic CC for the trial period and still keep Lightroom 6 running in tandem on your desktop.

We sincerely apologize for not providing a better user experience for our perpetual customers to try out Lightroom Classic CC while still keeping Lightroom 6 in place. This was a mistake on our end. Please let us know if you are experiencing any additional issues with this process moving forward.

What is the difference between Lightroom Classic CC 7.0 vs. Lightroom Classic CC 7.0.1?

The difference is the fix mentioned above, which only impacts perpetual customers, and the customer issue below, which impacts both perpetual and monthly subscribers. If any customer is experiencing crashes in High Sierra upon import from external devices (SD cards/iPhone, etc.), we recommend you upgrade to 7.0.1. Regardless, it’s best to stay up to date with the latest version of Lightroom Classic, and it’s free to do so as a paid, monthly subscriber.

How can I download Lightroom 6 if it’s already been removed in the process of downloading Lightroom CC Classic before this release?

Please follow the steps referenced under “Reinstall Lightroom 6.”

What happens if I attempt to update all apps that I am subscribed to?

Below, Tom Hogarty (director of product management for all things photography at Adobe) answers a few questions about Photoshop CC and Photoshop Classic CC.

From the Adobe Lightroom Journal:

How does this update affect my old Photography/Creative Cloud Plan?
TH: Within the Creative Cloud Photography plan we’ve updated the Lightroom you know and love to include performance and editing enhancements in a new version called Lightroom Classic. We added new Lightroom CC and a small amount of storage for you to experiment and try out the new cloud-based Lightroom offering. The Creative Cloud Photography plan – Lightroom Classic, Photoshop CC, and now the new Lightroom CC plus Adobe Spark – is still $9.99 per month. There is also a new Lightroom CC plan that is $9.99 per month that does not include Lightroom Classic or Photoshop CC but does include 1TB of cloud storage for your photography library.

Is Lightroom Classic being phased out? How long will it be until Adobe kills Lightroom Classic?
TH: No, we’re not phasing out Lightroom Classic and remain committed to investing in Lightroom Classic in the future. We know that for many of you, Lightroom Classic, is a tool you know and love and so it has an exciting roadmap of improvements well into the future. But please hold us accountable as we make updates in the following months and years to let us know if we’re meeting your expectations.

Does everything have to be synced to Lightroom CC or can users pick and choose what content syncs with the cloud?
TH: For this 1.0 release, everything imported is intended to upload to Creative Cloud. We clearly understand that there are situations where a customer would not want all of their images uploaded to Creative Cloud so let’s talk about those situations and how we can address them. In the case where a customer doesn’t want any images in the Creative Cloud, Lightroom Classic is and will continue to be an excellent workflow choice.

Some users have about 8TB worth of photos. How do they fit that into 1TB of space?
TH: We have plans available for 1TB, 2TB, 5TB and 10TB right now at $9.99 per TB per month. Let us know if you want more.

What if you don’t have superfast, unlimited Internet to sync everything? Won’t it likely take days to upload a full shoot of raw files to a cloud server?
TH: Upload times depend on your bandwidth but you can still start working on your images immediately. If your bandwidth is not going to support your current volume of photography, Lightroom Classic is and will continue to be an excellent workflow choice.

In regards to Lightroom 6, why did you abandon the Lightroom standalone version?
TH: Customers are overwhelmingly choosing the Creative Cloud Photography plan as the preferred way to get access to Lightroom. We’re aligning our investment with the direction our customers have signaled over the last several years.

From Adobe:

Camera Raw 10 is now available as a final release available in the Adobe Create Cloud desktop app.

Range Mask

Range Mask works within the structure of the existing local adjustment tools to give you more precision with your local adjustments. One way to think of it is that Range Mask is a modifier that can be applied to a local adjustment, allowing you to create more precise selections with less hassle. Range Mask is designed to be easy to use, and the resulting mask can be further refined by nudging the sliders.

Range Mask has two different modes to address two different types of color/tone-based masks: Color Range Mask and Luminance Range Mask.

Usage Instructions:

  1. Open an image into the Camera Raw plugin
  2. Select one of the local adjustment tools (Local Adjustment Brush, Graduated Filter, Radial Filter) and make an initial mask of your intended selection area.
  3. From the Range Mask option, select either Color or Luminance.
    • Color: Use the Eyedropper to select the colors you’d like to include in your selection. You can select up to 5 different colors using the Shift + click method with the eyedropper. Alternatively, you can sample a range of colors, even completely different colors, by dragging out an area with the eyedropper. Once selected, you can further refine your selection using the Amount slider.
    • Luminance: Use the Range and Smoothness sliders to adjust your mask and fine tune.

  4. Use the local adjustment sliders to make the desired edits to your images.
Check out Julieanne Kost’s video on the new Range Mask feature in Camera Raw 10.

The October 2017 update for Adobe Photoshop CC includes the following:

Better brush organization
Organize and save your brushes in the order you want. Drag and drop to reorder, create folders and sub-folders, scale the brush stroke preview, toggle new view modes, and save brush presets with opacity, flow, blend mode, and color.

Brush performance improvements
Don't be slowed down by lagging brushes. New, faster reaction time is especially noticeable when working on large documents with large brushes.

Access Lightroom Photos
Get your photos from Lightroom Cloud Services right inside Photoshop via Search or the Start Screen. With deeper integration between all the Creative Cloud photography desktop and mobile apps, all your photos are synced and accessible everywhere.

Brush stroke smoothing
Get a more polished look faster with a new smoothing algorithm. Vary the amount of smoothing for cleaner lines, even when using a mouse. Available in the Tool Options bar, along with Flow and Opacity.

Exclusive brushes from Kyle T. Webster
Access over 1,000 digital brushes from award-winning illustrator Kyle T. Webster, now available exclusively inside Photoshop.

Variable fonts
With new font technology from Adobe, Apple, Google, and Microsoft, you can define variations within each supported font for weight, height, slant, and more.

Quick Share menu
Share a flattened copy of your work via email, text, social networks, and more. This feature uses native OS sharing mechanisms, including already authenticated services.

Curvature Pen tool
Create paths more quickly, intuitively, and precisely. Push and pull segments directly instead of having to modify Bezier handles, similar to the Curvature tool in Illustrator. Simply double-click to switch between point types.

Path improvements
Improve the look and feel of your paths. Choose the color and line thickness to make them easier to see.

Copy and paste layers
Copy and paste multiple layers in groups, keeping the same order and location instead of having to drag them to reorder. Copy layers onto your clipboard and paste them at the desired specific spot in your panel, within and between documents in Photoshop.

Enhanced tooltips
Learn about the different tools in Photoshop without leaving the app. With enhanced tooltips, dynamic information surfaces when you hover over a tool.

360 panorama workflow
Edit and export 360 panoramas. Photoshop will maintain important metadata to work with third-party viewers. You can also pan and zoom around your image inside a spherical workspace for a realistic preview experience.

Properties panel improvements
Keep better track of details for Adobe Stock assets by viewing title and license state. View an image and find similar images on the Adobe Stock site. Edit type properties with multiple layers selected, change the leading, and more.

Support for Microsoft Dial
Native support for Microsoft Dial gives you quick access to important controls without having to use your mouse. Control brush parameters including size, hardness, opacity, flow, and smoothing.

Paste as plain text
Now you can paste text without the styling. No need to spend the time reformatting text after pasting.

Support for HEIF
Photoshop now supports High Efficiency Image File (HEIF) format, promoted by Apple in macOS 10.13 and iOS 11.0. With depth information provided by the iPhone 7 Plus and future devices, you can create a depth-of-field effect using the Lens Blur filter.

Select and Mask improvements
Get more accurate and realistic results with algorithm and performance improvements, especially in cases where the foreground and background color are similar. Other usability and performance improvements include faster Quick Mask and more intuitive view mode settings.

And so much more
Also includes: Performance and stability improvements, ability to save large files faster, better face detection for Face-Aware Liquify, better Content-Aware Crop and Content-Aware Fill on edges, and more.

From Adobe:

Integrated Cloud-Based Service Enables Easy Editing, Organizing, Storing and Sharing of Photography From Anywhere

Wednesday, October 18, 2017 9:00 am EDT – LAS VEGAS – Adobe today announced the all-new Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC cloud-based photography service. Launched over a decade ago, Lightroom became the industry’s leading desktop application for editing and organizing photography. Now in an increasingly mobile-centric world, and with major improvements in smartphone cameras, Lightroom is transforming digital photography again. Built for professionals and enthusiasts, the new Lightroom CC fulfills the demands of today’s photographers for a more accessible, cloud-based photography service for editing, organizing, storing and sharing their photos from wherever they are.

Featuring a streamlined user interface, Lightroom CC enables powerful editing in full resolution across mobile, desktop and the web. With Lightroom CC, photographers can make edits on one device and automatically synchronize their changes everywhere. Lightroom CC makes organizing photography collections easier with features like searchable keywords that are automatically applied without the hassle of tagging. And Lightroom CC makes it simple to share photos on social media.

“As the leader in digital photography, today Adobe is unveiling Lightroom CC, our next generation photography service,” said Bryan Lamkin, executive vice president and general manager, Digital Media at Adobe. “Lightroom CC answers photographers’ demand for a deeply integrated, intelligent, cloud-based photography solution.” Key Lightroom CC capabilities include:

  • The most powerful image editing technology: Built on the same imaging technology that powers Photoshop and Lightroom, Lightroom CC offers a new streamlined interface with easy-to-use sliders, presets and quick adjustment tools.
  • Edit anywhere: Lightroom CC allows photographers to edit full-resolution photos anywhere – on mobile devices, desktop or the web. Edits made on one device are automatically synced across devices for anywhere access.
  • Worry free back-up, cloud storage: Lightroom CC has scalable storage options for safe and secure back up of full-resolution photos – including raw files.
  • Powered by Adobe Sensei: Adobe Sensei’s machine learning technology automatically applies searchable keywords to objects in photographs – making organization in Lightroom CC effortless.
  • Built-in sharing tools: Lightroom CC makes it easy to share photos directly via social media and to create custom Lightroom web galleries that can be shared via link. Photographers can also share their work through new Adobe Portfolio integration with Lightroom CC.
  • Updated award-winning mobile and web experiences:
    • Lightroom CC for mobile on iOS: Built-in search functionality powered by Adobe Sensei, keyword support, hierarchical album support, an enhanced iPad app layout and iOS 11 files support.
    • Lightroom CC for mobile on Android: Tablet support and a local adjustments brush, along with the same built-in search functionality, keyword support and hierarchical album support as seen in the iOS app.
    • Lightroom CC for web: Ability to create and manage a public gallery page, as well as enhanced integration with Adobe Portfolio, which enables subscribers to easily import collections and publish their best shots to a customized Portfolio website in just a few clicks.

Updates to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic CC

Major updates to Lightroom Classic CC, previously known as Lightroom CC, include an enhanced Embedded Preview workflow that enables users to scroll through large sets of photos to select a subset of images significantly faster than before. Lightroom Classic CC also features new editing capabilities, including a new Color Range and Luminance Masking functionality that enables users to apply precise edits. As contrasted with the cloud-centric, anywhere workflows of Lightroom CC, the new Lightroom Classic CC continues to focus on a more traditional desktop-first workflow with local storage and file and folder control.

Availability, Plans and Pricing

The all-new Lightroom CC is available across three photography plans:

  • For photographers that want an all-in-one plan that offers the full benefits of the Lightroom CC service plus the transformative power of Photoshop, the Creative Cloud Photography plan with 1 TB includes Lightroom CC, Lightroom for mobile and web, Photoshop CC, Adobe Spark with premium features, Adobe Portfolio, and 1 TB of cloud storage ($19.99/month, but available at $14.99/month for the first year for existing Creative Cloud Photography customers).
  • Lightroom CC has also been added to the existing Creative Cloud Photography plan with an additional 20 GB of storage to help users get started on the new service. This plan remains at $9.99/month and includes Lightroom CC, Lightroom for mobile and web, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop CC, Adobe Spark with premium features, Adobe Portfolio, and 20 GB of cloud storage. Creative Cloud All Apps members also have access to the new Lightroom CC service.
  • The all-new Lightroom CC plan addresses the needs of photographers who want a cloud-based photography service for editing, organizing, storing and sharing their photos from wherever they are, and includes Lightroom CC, Lightroom for mobile and web, Adobe Spark with premium features, Adobe Portfolio, and 1 TB of cloud storage ($9.99/month).

For those who are truly mobile and don’t require a desktop photography solution, the Lightroom Mobile plan for iOS and Android is available with 100 GB ($4.99/month).

From Adobe:

Being creative with your photos has never been easier.

October 4, 2017 – The Elements team is excited to announce the release of Photoshop Elements 2018 & Premiere Elements 2018.

Before we get into what’s new for this release, we’d like to reassure you that you didn’t miss versions 16 and 17! Moving forward both apps will take on the upcoming year of their release in-lieu of a version number; hence, the transition from version 15 to Photoshop Elements 2018 and Premiere Elements 2018.

With that, let’s get to the good stuff.

Over the years, the Elements products have emphasized easy photo and video organization, editing, creation, and sharing by combining content intelligence with a user-friendly interface and modes for every level of user.

This release focuses on enhancing the experience even further for memory keepers with hassle free organization, automated editing and some fun new Guided Edits that walk you through how to edit and create. As you’ll see, there are a number of exciting new features and enhancements so being creative with your photos and videos has never been easier.

Here’s what’s new and enhanced:

Adobe Elements Organizer 2018

  • Auto-Curate – You no longer need to painfully look through a large batch of your photos to select the best ones. The Elements Organizer now automatically curates your photos based on quality, faces, subjects and more.
  • Totally reimagined slideshows – Slideshows are a popular and fun way to showcase and share your memories, and now you can turn your curated photos and video clips into stylish and dynamic slideshows with just one click. And of course you can add your own personal touch by choosing a different theme and music, or adding captions.
  • New Guided Edits – Guided Edits transform seemingly complex tasks into easy to follow step-by-step instructions that guide you to fantastic results. Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements now offer 67 Guided Edits, including eight brand new ones in this release.
  • Swap Backgrounds – Replace backgrounds in seconds by selecting the subject of a photo and placing it on a background that’s more interesting.
  • Create Double Exposures – Double exposures continue to grow in popularity, but are difficult and time consuming. No more with this new Guided Edit that brings one photo to life within another to create the surreal effect.
  • Add Artistic Overlay Effects – Embellish any photo with a shape overlay and one-click effects that make it a work of art. This Guided Edit is great for scrapbook pages and photo crafts.
  • Make Amazing Watercolors – With this Guided Edit, turn any photo into a beautiful, textured watercolor—and even finish it off with text.
  • Create fun bounce-back effects – Get step-by-step help making a segment of your video run forward and backward repetitively. Export your bounce-back effect as an animated GIF or short video clip that you can quickly share across social channels with your friends and family.
  • Freeze frames with motion titles – Another new Guided Edit that helps you create a freeze frame of your video and add an eye-catching motion title for pro-looking results.
  • Fix Action Cam Footage – Eliminate the wide angle fisheye effect of action cams with guidance on how to expertly trim, correct color, and fix lens distortions so it looks its best.
  • Create animated social posts – Create a short visual story to share on social media by embellishing a video clip with either static or animated text.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018

  • Automatic Selection – Making a perfect selection is always tough, so we’ve simplified the process. With the new Auto Selection, making precise photo selections has never been easier – simply click, drag and it’s done.
  • Open closed eyes like magic – This happens all the time. You take several group photos and in every one someone has their eyes closed. Well we’ve got a fix for that. Photoshop Elements can now automatically copy the open eyes from one photo and blend them into another to create the perfect shot.

Adobe Premiere Elements 2018

  • Candid Moments – Now you can automatically extract great photos from your raw video footage with ease, and never need to worry about missing that critical photo while shooting your videos.
  • Smart Trim – Automatically trim the bad scenes and keep the good ones based on the style of your video. Smart Trim finds and brings together the best scenes based on the style of your video, and you can even customize that automation.

These are just some of the new and enhanced features in Photoshop Elements 2018 and Premiere Elements 2018. We hope you’re as excited about this release as we are and look forward to your feedback.

– The Elements Team

Site visitor Mark sent an email earlier this week to alert us to a peculiar issue where Adobe Lightroom 6 displays and imports duplicate images when using a USB cable to import photos from the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II when two memory cards are installed in the camera with only one of them having RAW images recorded on it. One of the earliest references to the issue appears on the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom forums in a post made more than a year ago.

Unfortunately, according to Mark, the issue isn't limited to Lightroom 6; it apparently occurs with Apple Aperture 3.6 as well. That the issue appears on multiple software platforms may indicate that a firmware update from Canon will be necessary to correct the issue.

Has anyone else run into this duplicate file issue when importing RAW files with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II? If so, besides taking one of the memory cards out of the camera, did you find a convenient workaround? Let us know in the comments below.

Adobe has announced that it is ending support or Flash, a plugin technology that – although outdated – may still be an integral part of many photographers' websites. Thankfully, those photographers have ample time to update their websites using alternative natively supported technologies.

From Adobe:

Adobe has long played a leadership role in advancing interactivity and creative content – from video, to games and more – on the web. Where we’ve seen a need to push content and interactivity forward, we’ve innovated to meet those needs. Where a format didn’t exist, we invented one – such as with Flash and Shockwave. And over time, as the web evolved, these new formats were adopted by the community, in some cases formed the basis for open standards, and became an essential part of the web.

But as open standards like HTML5, WebGL and WebAssembly have matured over the past several years, most now provide many of the capabilities and functionalities that plugins pioneered and have become a viable alternative for content on the web. Over time, we’ve seen helper apps evolve to become plugins, and more recently, have seen many of these plugin capabilities get incorporated into open web standards. Today, most browser vendors are integrating capabilities once provided by plugins directly into browsers and deprecating plugins.

Given this progress, and in collaboration with several of our technology partners – including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla – Adobe is planning to end-of-life Flash. Specifically, we will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020 and encourage content creators to migrate any existing Flash content to these new open formats.

Several industries and businesses have been built around Flash technology – including gaming, education and video – and we remain committed to supporting Flash through 2020, as customers and partners put their migration plans into place. Adobe will continue to support Flash on a number of major OSs and browsers that currently support Flash content through the planned EOL. This will include issuing regular security patches, maintaining OS and browser compatibility and adding features and capabilities as needed. We remain fully committed to working with partners, including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla to maintain the security and compatibility of Flash content. [To see each partner’s announcement on this news, click on the links inside each partner name.] In addition, we plan to move more aggressively to EOL Flash in certain geographies where unlicensed and outdated versions of Flash Player are being distributed.

Adobe will also remain at the forefront of leading the development of new web standards and actively participate in their advancement. This includes continuing to contribute to the HTML5 standard and participating in the WebAssembly Community Group. And we’ll continue to provide best in class animation and video tools such as Animate CC, the premier web animation tool for developing HTML5 content, and Premiere Pro CC.

Looking ahead, Adobe will continue to provide the best tools and services for designers and developers to create amazing content for the web.

From Adobe:

The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom.

Today, we also released versions of Lr for iOS and Android that provide updated camera support. Check them out here.

A few clarifications for this release:

What happened to Lightroom CC 2015.11/6.11?

Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw releases are tightly coupled as both products share the Camera Raw imaging technology. As a product team, we decided to skip Camera Raw version 9.11 and instead use 9.12 due to the unfortunate events that occurred on that day. In keeping our version naming consistent, Lightroom is releasing CC 2015.12 / 6.12.

Will performance enhancements that I requested via the survey here be in this release?

Lightroom CC 2015.12 / 6.12 does not include performance improvements based on your survey responses. We appreciate your candid feedback on Lightroom performance, and are working on several projects to address your concerns.

From the Lightroom Journal:

Today, we’ve got lots of great updates for Lightroom for iOS and Android.

iOS

Available now through the iOS App Store, today’s release includes a new selective brush, a new details tab, and an improved interface for iPads. As always, Lightroom for iOS is free to use and can be downloaded here.

Selective Brush

One of the most requested features in Lightroom for iOS is now here—the selective brush. Using this tool, you can selectively paint in enhancements to any part of your image. If you’re using an iPhone that supports 3D Touch (such as an iPhone 6s or later), you can even vary the effect by just pressing softer or harder as you paint. And for iPad Pro users working with an Apple Pencil, you get the same capability—press harder to apply more of the effect, or softer to apply less.

We’ve also added in the ability to selectively erase both the linear and radial gradients, making them even more powerful than before.

Details Tab

Another often requested feature has been added in this release—global control over sharpening and noise reduction. These advanced tools are often used to add the finishing touches to photographs by controlling noise and enhancing image details.

New iPad Interface

With the introduction of the iPad Pro, and now the iPad Pro 2, the iPad has become a serious option as a laptop replacement for any photographer. To that end, we’ve worked hard to make a truly portable and yet powerful version of Lightroom that is designed for the larger touch-based interface of an iPad.

Android
We wanted to provide the best Android experience possible so we redesigned Lightroom for Android from the ground up to be faster, more efficient, and, well, more Android-y. Every screen has been redesigned with the goal of ensuring a natural, native Android experience while providing the highest quality, professional-grade mobile photo editing app ever.

Check out some of the new and updated interfaces by downloading this free update now by tapping here.

From the Lightroom Journal Blog:

On Lightroom Performance

I would like to address concerns recently voiced by our community of customers around Lightroom performance, as improving performance is our current top priority. We have a history, starting with our first public beta, of working with our customers to address workflow and feature needs, and we’d like to take that same approach regarding your performance concerns. We already understand many of the current pain points around GPU, import performance, certain editing tasks and review workflows and are investing heavily in improving those areas. Over the past year we’ve added numerous enhancements to address your performance concerns but we understand we will have a lot of work to do to meet your expectations. If you have feedback or would like to work with the Lightroom team on your most pressing issues, please fill out this survey.

Regards,
Tom Hogarty
