From Canon USA:
Canon U.S.A. And Ron Howard Select Eight Winners From 96,362 Photo Entries For 'Project Imagin8ion'
"Project Imagin8ion," the First Hollywood Film in History Inspired by a User-Generated Photo Contest, Will Begin Production in September
NEW YORK, August 4, 2011 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, has collaborated with one of Hollywood's most influential directors, Ron Howard, to select the eight winners of the "Project Imagin8ion" contest from 96,362 submissions. Launched on May 22, photographers of all levels were invited to submit their most imaginative photographs based on a series of eight separate movie themes, each one a core tenet of storytelling, to ultimately inspire Ron Howard's short film. The "Project Imagin8ion" film will be directed by one of today's most versatile and dynamic young talents, Bryce Dallas Howard. The eight winning photographs can now be seen at
The winners chosen span in age from 20 to 44 years old and are from across the country. They include:
Walter Arnold of Hendersonville, N.C., winner in the SETTING category for the photo, "The Final View"
Jen Berry of Los Angeles, winner in the CHARACTER category for the photo, "Dreams"
Mikey L'Heureux of Tarzana, Calif., winner in the MOOD category for the photo, "City Lights"
Brooke Shaden of Canoga Park, Calif., winner in the TIME category for the photo, "Running From Wind"
Alan Michael Martelly of Peachtree City, Ga., winner in the GOAL category for the photo, "My Word"
Lexia Frank of Wesley Chapel, Fla., winner in the RELATIONSHIP category for the photo, "Too Much"
Chris Wehner of Broken Arrow, Okla., winner in the OBSTACLE category for the photo, "Yea, Though I Walk"
Kelly Shipp of Conway, Ark., winner in the category of THE UNKNOWN for the photo, "Where One Day Ends, One Day Begins"
"This project has opened my eyes to the infinite possibilities of tapping into a larger community for creative inspiration," said Ron Howard. "As I selected the photographs, the story started to take shape using these building blocks to drive the tone and narrative possibilities. I was handed this challenge by Canon and I'm very interested to see how this exercise plays out with Bryce now taking charge to direct a film that is very much influenced by these eight photos."
Ron Howard, Bryce Dallas Howard and Freestyle Productions are currently working with the eight winning photos to craft the story, develop the script and produce a short film using Canon DSLR products. The film goes into production in September and will premiere later this year in New York City, where the winners will be invited to a red carpet event and have the opportunity to meet Ron Howard.
"Our goal was to launch a long-term campaign that demonstrates how Canon's technology enables artistry among photographers of all levels, championing the imagination of the masses," said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. "The number of entries has by far surpassed our expectations and we know the finished product, 'A Ron Howard Production,' will be a truly beautiful film, one that would never have been made without the enthusiastic online community."
Grey New York, Canon's agency partner for over thirty years, continues to develop the creative and digital elements of the multiphase campaign that will go beyond the short film. Alliance, the entertainment and lifestyle marketing division of Grey, is managing the partnership with Ron Howard and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Canon USA has announced:
"Captain America: The First Avenger" Action Shots Captured With Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Cameras
Full 1080P HD Capture, 24p Frame Rate and Canon EF Lenses Provide Compatibility and Creative Options for Movie Production
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 1, 2011 – Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, announced today that the highly anticipated feature film, "Captain America: The First Avenger", used Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR cameras to capture many of the movie's action shots. Throughout the super hero action picture, the 5D Mark II was used to shoot motion sequences that were seamlessly integrated with the production's 35mm film footage.
More compact and lightweight than traditional motion-picture cameras, the 5D Mark II offers creative advantages such as compatibility with Canon's wide range of high-performance EF lenses, user-selectable frame rates, including 24p (23.976 fps), the standard for motion-picture cinematography, and full 1920 x 1080 HD imagery captured by the camera's high-resolution 21.1-megapixel (36mm by 24mm) Canon CMOS sensor. According to Jonathan Taylor, second unit director/director of photography on "Captain America: The First Avenger", these features made the 5D Mark II an excellent choice for the capture of dramatic POV (point-of-view) action shots.
"The challenge with a lot of action photography is getting the camera in the right position," Taylor noted. "I'm always looking to get the camera into impossible to reach places because those kinds of shots make action sequences much more exciting. Most 35mm motion-picture cameras and even the leading digital cinematography cameras are just too big to get into interesting positions."
Action scenes in "Captain America: The First Avenger" in which Taylor used 5D Mark II cameras for POV shots include a car chase and crash, and a high-speed motorcycle pursuit. The small size of the camera enabled Taylor to mount it on the interiors and exteriors of moving vehicles to capture dramatic action shots. The camera's size also ensured that it was "invisible" to the film cameras shooting the same scene from a distance.
"The thing with action is that the more angles you can shoot, the faster the cuts you can use, and the more energy you get into a sequence," Taylor added.
Previously, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II cameras and EF lenses were used for action shots in the blockbuster hit "Iron Man 2".

In a press release issued today, the United States Golf Association (USGA) has announced the implementation of a near real-time photo delivery system utilizing the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and Canon WFT-E2 II A Wireless File Transmitter:
Fan Experience On U.S. Open Site Enhanced By New Technology
IBM-Powered PicStream on to Utilize Canon Wireless File Transmitters
June 16, 2011
Far Hills, N.J. – The United States Golf Association (USGA) will employ a new digital user experience for U.S. Open fans that will enable viewing of photographic images at near real-time speeds. PicStream, the IBM-powered photo console on, will feature images created and transmitted from the grounds of Congressional Country Club using Canon wireless file transmitters. It marks the first use of such technology on a major scale at a live sporting event.
“Canon’s wireless transmitters will enable our images to be edited, tagged and delivered to audiences faster than ever before,” said John Mummert, the USGA’s manager of creative services and senior staff photographer. “This is the new transmission standard in the world of sports photography.”
The USGA traditionally uses teams of veteran golf photographers to shoot for, news media and the USGA Museum. According to Mummert, volunteers had to run photographers’ compact flash cards to the USGA Media Center from far-flung locations on the course at previous championships. Images are captioned, processedand distributed to and the press from the Media Center. This system failed to deliver the transfer speeds that today’s audience demands, especially given the 100-plus acres that comprise a championship golf course.
“Fans want instant content, and we want to provide it,” Mummert said. “Canon stepped forward with the wireless transmitters, and IBM was able to integrate the technology into their PicStream application to enable near real-time publishing capability. These technologies should enhance the overall fan experience significantly.”
The Canon WFT-E2 II A Wireless File Transmitter chosen for the U.S. Open is a camera-powered compact unit that attaches to the side of the EOS-1D Mark IV camera. The WFT-E2 II A transmits camera images over a wireless local area network (LAN) at up to 492 feet (150 meters). Portable USB modems carried by the photographers will relay images to the USGA Media Center’s tent.
“This technology has been available for a while, but only recently has become something that we are able to use to our advantage,” Mummert noted. “We tested it repeatedly at Congressional Country Club and the transmitting times were exceptional.”

“Project Imagin8ion” is the First Hollywood Film in History Based on Eight Independently Contributed Photographs, Produced by Freestyle in Collaboration with Canon U.S.A.
NEW YORK, N.Y., June 9, 2011 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging, announced today that Bryce Dallas Howard, one of Hollywood’s most versatile and dynamic young talents both on screen and behind the camera, has been invited by Canon and her father Ron Howard to direct his latest film endeavor, “Project Imagin8ion.” The initiative is the first user-generated photo contest to serve as the foundation for a Hollywood short film, which now boasts the A-list team of Bryce Dallas Howard directing and Ron Howard executive producing, in partnership with Francesca Silvestri and Kevin Chinoy of Freestyle, a full-service development and production company.
Launched on May 22nd, “Project Imagin8ion” encourages photographers of all levels to submit photos based on a series of movie themes: Setting, Time, Character, Mood, Relationship, Goal, Obstacle and the Unknown. The contest pulled in over 8,500 photo submissions on the first day alone and aims to foster dialogue between Canon and a community of photography enthusiasts, inspiring everyone to achieve new levels of creativity. Consumers can visit to submit photos through June 14th and to vote on the semi-finalists through June 23rd. Throughout the promotion, Ron Howard, Bryce Dallas Howard and Freestyle, with the help of Canon experts and the Project Imagin8ion community, will narrow down the submissions and ultimately select eight winning photos – one from each movie theme category – to become the basis and inspiration for a short film shot with Canon EOS DSLR cameras and lenses.
“It is an honor for me to take part in Canon’s ‘Project Imagin8ion,’ partnering with a brand that is empowering young filmmakers and is at the forefront of technology,” said Bryce Dallas Howard. “It’s an absolutely inspired concept and I’m over the moon to not only direct this film but to work with my father, a true mentor and my personal hero. My hope is that this film will honor the creativity, passion, and artistic integrity that so many people have put into their photographs.”
“I think Bryce is a great choice to helm this film,” said Ron Howard. “She is artistic, compassionate, curious, and loves to think outside the box. There is nothing formulaic about her approach to filmmaking and I believe that she is the perfect director for Canon's creative experiment, given how original it is and how she is part of this digital generation. Bryce has the experience and wherewithal to create a memorable film.”
Script development will not begin until all eight photos are chosen, fostering a new approach to storytelling and filmmaking for the team. Production will take place during the summer and fall, a busy time for the actress/producer who will star on screen this August as “Hilly” in Tate Taylor’s film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s “The Help” and as “Rachael” opposite Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the September release of “50/50.” Also in September of this year, Howard’s producerial debut “Restless,” a film directed by Gus Van Sant will be released. The “Project Imagin8tion” short film will premiere later this year in New York City, with the contest winners in town for a red carpet event where they will have the opportunity to meet the famous father-daughter pair. “Project Imagin8ion” will mark the second time Bryce Dallas Howard has worked with Freestyle, the first being the Reel Moments short film program with Glamour magazine.
Grey New York and Alliance, the entertainment and lifestyle marketing division of Grey, are responsible for the campaign and talent negotiations.
